How to break it to your employer your intention to join the reserves

Talked to a recruiter about joining the army reserves and I’m excited about serving my country and learning a crucial skill I can put towards my current field (IT). I’m worried though what my employer will say seeing as I just started this position a month ago. I know the law is on my side, but I am worried about my employer perceiving this as an inconvenience.

It’s simple. Your employer can pound sand. As you stated, you are protected by the law and your employer can’t do shit to you if you so choose to serve. You can do this in a courteous manner.

If you are gone for long periods, employers can not fire you but they don't have to hold your job open. Also, unlike the Air Force, the Army can send you off on year long deployments. Though training can be almost a year or more.
