Computer problem

My HP pavillion laptop will not start unless I put it in the freezer for 10 minutes even if it has been completely off for a few days. Anyone know why? Someone told me it could be the hard drive. When I start it up normally it wont power up but the blue light is on and I can hear the hard drive turn on then turn off over and over. Anyone ever had the same problem?

What possessed you to stick it in the freezer in the first place?

I wondered the same thing. I guess the next troubleshooting step is to microwave it.

I've heard of doing this with hard drives and other non-fully-functioning computer bits to get them working for a short time (to back up data, etc). I don't know anything about the science behind it, though.

My question is, once the laptop starts, does it stay on?

Some one told me to stick it in the freezer if it wont start up. I laughted when he told me that but sure enought it worked. I know its kinda weird. lol. Once its on it stays on and I will run a hard drive disk check and it says the drive is ok.in the last hour I read on a thread that companys who do data recovery will put the hard drive in sub zero temps to get data off of them. Anyways, if it is the hard drive any suggestions as to what kind of drive to buy.

Well....if anything was truly valuable on the hard drive, I know Geek Squad contracts with data recovery specialists. I was quoted over $1000 to recover a bad hard drive of mine, definitely not worth it.

As far as recommendations for a new hard drive, Western Digital has never failed me.

Pretty sure you'll have to reinstall...

Yeah, I suggest switching to this OS. Definitely fewer headaches than Windows...and free!

I currently have western digital. Im not concerned about data because I backed it up already. I dont have the windows disk the computer came with and there is not a backup on the computer. Does this mean I have to buy a new XP package from best buy?

Yes! I have it on two of my laptops. As far as MS Word, openoffice http://www.openoffice.org/ comes with ubuntu. If you don't like openoffice, you can always use Google Docs. :-)

It worked fine when I deleted XP on my laptops and installed ubuntu. I have had no problems with drivers.

I'll give it a shot but if it does not work out so well there will be a video on here of my next diagnostic test.... a laptop in a microwave

Ubuntu has worked out great and is waaaaay more secure against malware than Windows or even Macs.

Good luck!

Ubuntu is the biggest piece of crap ever written. Nothing good runs on Ubuntu. If you want a free piece of junk go for it.

Might as well just bury it in the snow now.

if its a new laptop there may be a feature where the OS installation files are located on-board.

from a book I have

Solution:
• Carefully remove it from the computer.
• Place it in the freezer for 24 hours, then put it back in the computer. You should have approximately 30 minutes of good spin time left before a fina–l—and much more permanen–t—shut down.
This problem often arises from a catastrophic hard disk crash—bearings are usually the culprit, coupled with badly worn read/write heads. I've used this technique on many computers throughout the last fifteen years as "resident expert" and saved virtually all important data.
If you're in a pinch for time, such as critical data needed for a briefing in twenty minutes, you can opt for the more drastic cooling technique—a C02 fire extinguisher...

If that really works, then it's interesting indeed. However, worst case, go purchase a transfer cable, extract the HD, and attach the cable to the connections on the back of it. Then, plug the other end into a working CPU, and woahla! Recovery.

What I would like to know is why when I put the computer in the freezer it works and keeps working until I turn it off or it goes into hybernation?

you might want to consult with this guy. He's had a lot of 'problems' and could probably give some good insight.

I'm shocked that most of you guys don't know what you're talking about.

If the computer is having problems powering on, it is not a hard drive. It is a hardware issue that will likely be very expensive to repair.

Maybe the OP is stating the issue incorrectly. Does the computer show the initial HP boot screen when you turn it on? If it does, then it could be a hard drive.

Western Digital makes the cheapest hard drives. Not the most reliable, but I think it will suffice for an older unit.

Yes, if you replace the hard drive you will have to reinstall the OS. A new hard drive will never come with an OS already installed on it.

You don't have to buy a whole new windows OS. You purchase a license for windows when you buy the computer. That's what that green sticker is on the bottom of your computer for. It contains the product key and license for the OS. You will need an OEM windows CD though to attempt to load it. Otherwise you can pay a store to do it.

If your computer does not reach the initial boot screen, I would not repair it. It is not worth it when you can buy a netbook for $200 or a decent standard size one for $300.

Sell your broken computer to www.cashforlaptops.com and get like 50 bucks for it. Then take the check and go buy another one.

Problem Solved.

computer does not power on. This means broken. Went to Best Buy and asked for refund. This means money back. On way to Best Buy, bowels exploded all over Echo. This means shit. Caretaker clean shit up with hook. Caretaker put computer in freezer. Echo covered in shit.

Freezing the drive does occasionally cause it to spin.

But don't put the entire laptop in the freezer. Not good for the LIQUID crystal display :).
