could the south have won the war?

In a hindsight, how could the south won the civil war? Is there anything you believe they could've done to bring about a different outcome? Many historians believe the south could've turn the tide and even won the war if only they held on a little longer given the north was running out of both men and supplies.

You sound as if the north winning the war was a bad thing.

If Jefferson Davis had left Joseph Johnston in control of the Army in Georgia, Johnston might have delayed Sherman's advance into Atlanta long enough for McClellan to have won the election of 1864, who would have then negotiated a peace that would have allowed the CSA to become a separate country. However, if that had happened, I don't doubt that at some time the North' relationship with the South would have been similar to the U.S. relationship with Canada and the UK today. I also think the CSA would eventually bow to international pressure and eliminate slavery, most likely by 1900.

Perhaps if Lee had used some terrorist tactics..bombed a few northern cities...political assasinations...you know that kind of stuff. The fact was he was never going to win the war on the battle field.

Well, for starters, if Colonel Chamberlain hadn't held the flank at Gettysburg, then Lee's Army would've had a clear path all the way to Washington, D.C.

The Confederate Army: A rich man's war but a poor man's battle.

They could have marched to Washington after first bull run and probably ended it all. Or if Gettysburg had gone differently the south very well may have won.

However if this would have happened America would be very different and would likely be a collections of countries (since the entire west coast and alaska/hawaii weren't states yet). I read this would have led to the Balkanization of the US.

It is entirely possible that the Confederacy could have won the war. The Confederate Federal government was seeking funding from both England and France to further the war effort. These two nations turned down the Confederacy due to the States keeping slaves. Had the Confederacy emancipated the slaves before the start of the Civil War (1) it would have ensured funding from Europe, and (2) the make up of the United States could be have been very different in 2010.

Btw, I for one am glad that the North won. I respect the South for standing up for States' rights, and for fighting for what they believed was right, but in the end, I don't want to even imagine a truly divided Nation.
