Dealer wants $1300 to replace the timing belt in my 2013 Odyssey. F that!

It's at 100,000 miles and needed an oil change so I took it to the dealer because they are free. Part of the recommended service is the timing belt and plugs. They want $1300 to do the belt and $1600 to do belt and plugs.

I LOL'd so hard at them.

Who would pay that? 6 plugs take 30 minutes tops and the belt would probably take a couple hours.

So, why are you posting and not replacing the timing belt this afternoon? Are you stupid?

Take a chill pill Jose. I ordered the kit. $180 online. I'll do it next weekend. Are you one of the dumbasses that paid $1300?

$1300 for timing belt is average but that’s what you get for a rice burner.

At a gas station or maybe if you find a iguana eater, with cash it can be done for less.

Ive done timing belts and the Honda is not an easy one to do without a lift. $200-300 of that is parts the rest labor. If you are a good shade tree mechanic and its your first ever Honda J35 engine its going to take you more than 2 hours - if you fuck it up it will cost you a new engine.

Go to an indie and you will save $400 off that price. Do the plugs yourself as that is an easy diy. Next time shop for a vehicle with a timing chain instead of a belt. Chains are not without problems but you dont have to change them usually.

Finally, since you are still taking your vehicle to the dealer at 100k you obviously are not a mechanic of any kind. You say plugs would take you 30 min - Id be surprised if you didnt spend hours only to break a plug off in the head or cross thread one of the plugs. You would end up having your vehicle towed to a mechanic and pay $500 to have them fix your fuck-up.

You need to find a good indie that knows Hondas (most know them well as they are such common cars). It wouldnt hurt if you did start to do little jobs on your car so you can learn a thing or two instead of being the kind of uninformed person you seem to be.

Have fun freeing the crankshaft without a lift. Id pay money to watch an idiot like OP try that. There are a couple of tricks you can use without a lift but you really have to do some research and go slow. No fucking way a first timer bangs that job out in a few hours without a lift or even shop manual.

First I would run the old belt another year or 20,000 miles. A 6 cylinder honda engine timing belt job runs about 700 to 800 at a good independant shop. The 4 cylinder Honda motors are usually timing chains that last the life of the vehicle. I have worked on Hondas and they are ok but not as good as Toyota.
I have seen Hondas with the original timing belt go 200,000 miles but I would not push it that far. 120,000 is reasonable.

OP would be lucky to be able to change his headlight bulbs on that car. Give me a break - dude knows zero about auto repair. I hope he does try it in his driveway. Please update us with the repair fees after you get it towed to a shop from your driveway.

I got the belt on today. Wasn’t that hard. One of those black plastic covers cracked coming off so I need to order another one. So I pulled out the pin thing for the tensioner and then started it and it backfired a few times and I heard a clanking sound and then it quit running. Now it wont start at all after several tries. The scanner also says the crank sensor is bad now too. Do any of you self proclaimed experts know whats wrong now?

Push the car away from the house, pour gas in the engine compartment and light it. Use the insurance check to get a Toyota Highlander, it has a timing chain.

There sure are a lot of idiots commenting. This job is not hard it just takes time. Buy the harmonic balancer removal socket and the crank bolt will come right off in a second with an impact. You do not need a lift. The guy saying that is retarded. Buy the Aisin timing belt kit with water pump and replace both at the same time. People are really just very stupid or just libtarded not to be able to do this kind of thing.

Understand what? That libtards are moronic idiots who think the government should change their lightbulbs for them? If you can change your oil you can do the timing belt on an Odyssey. If you're a libtard, shell out $1600 because getting ass fucked is what you like.

You do realize there are youtube videos showing you how to do it step by step. It's a PITA but definitely doable for your average shade tree.

Obviously you're a libtard because you hate humans, have no family and will die alone.

Anyway, if you're the least bit handy and can do a brake job you can do this. I guess the mirons saying how hard it is are millennials who have never accomplished anything in life and obviously don't have any mental capacity. Could you imagine a libtard trying to do a tune-up on a car with a triple carburetors and points? Lol! They'd be in therapy for a year. People do this shit everyday.

some cars have plugs that need tools to get to

plugs are allot more expensive than they were. at 100k they suggest changing the wires? if they do: wires are even more expensive than plugs. that adds up to $300 very quickly. they'd only give you that price if your getting other work done. (if your including parts and labor whole price)

it's a bitch. $1300 would be the normal dealer price to GET IT DONE RIGHT by an experienced technician (tell service writer you demand this). your off the hook for mistakes or parts someone else broke previously: the dealer has to eat all that.

again, not a bad price if A CERTIFIED HONDA DEALER gave it to you. if you went somewhere else: your an idiot

i knew this guy who did a timing belt he got TOTALLY fucked over

he was not told before it came to him a "3rd party shop" had attempted it and cross threaded a pinion (bearing shaft) and it was crooked. it was either use machine tools and fix it or order a new upper block (do a whole engine job)

I knew someone else who ran into kinda the same: the belt was making noise. After he tore it down he found out that a washer had been destroyed by a 3rd party and a new one could not be put back in due to the damage. He had to either come up with "new engineering" or order an engine.

(note this guy, if he has to order an engine, the customer will claim he broke it and he'd end up having to pay - despite the fact some gas station or who actually broke it)

Point. It's a "the difficult kind of" timing belt job there's ALLOT that can go wrong.

And it's a worry if some shop had that cover off and broke something in the past.

so that guy who got the "dented washer"

I asked him: if the belt was still in good condition why did you replace it? He said "because you can't give the customer back the car with the noise he won't believe you did any work and won't want to pay you for taking the cover off. if your %98 there, you do the belt while your there."

You have to replace the cam module when you change the timing belt. That part is $450 and the dealer has to program the new one or the VTEC wont work.

Yes that is what I said. But first timer - no fucking way. Also even average shade tree mechanics dont bring their autos to the dealer for any reason - free oil or not. Finally an average shade tree mechanic would agree this it is difficult to free the crankshaft bolt without a lift. You need an impact wrench and/or a breaker bars to free it - difficult lying on your back under the car.

OP is a dipshit with no skinned knuckles or broken bolts under his belt.

If somebody isn't competent at auto mechanics, and even most males are not, then I would advise they take their cars to trained auto mechanics to change the timing belt. There are too many ways to fuck up an engine royally doing that job. If they don't have an established relationship with a decent auto repair shop (Jiffy Lube does not count) then taking the car to the dealer may be the best option, even if it means overpaying.

I had to reset the timing on a $40,000 almost new car which had become my job (it was out of place and un-marked but not by me). If I was off by a tooth it would have costed a ton of money - destroyed a new and expensive motor.

The shop foreman knew the job was going on and inspected my work before I put the cover on.

Very fun job.

#1 NO ONE ASKED IF YOU'D DONE IT. YOUR NOT OP.

#2 OP MAY OR MAY NOT BE THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE HAD SMALL SHOPS DAMAGE HIS CAR. HE/SHE DID NOT SAY.

#3 no one believes you've done the repair. we do believe your a fucking foreigner trying to fuck over someone's car.

the Question was whether a past mechanic had damaged any of the many parts involved in the job: which could make OP's job miserable or fail or at least fail money-wise

NOT whether OP had himself done the job before

OP will be back next week, complaining about his engine he ruined because he didn’t use a lift or have any of the special Honda tools required to complete this job. There is a reason Honda dealer charges $1300 for factory trained experts to do the job. Idiots.

There are tricks to freeing the crankshft bolt. One involves setting your braker bar on the ground and starting the engine to break lose the bolt. Ive done timing belts and there is absolutely nothing complex involved its simply a matter of access to the parts. If you are reaching down into a honda engine its very difficult to get to the parts - much easier from below under a lift. On your back isnt much fun for this job but doable.

If you like this work like I do you MIGHT enjoy this job. OP is a troll and/or doesnt understand working with hand tools in tight spaces. most people dont.
