Lessons in Pay Content: Newsday and its 35 Online Subscribers
Date: January 26, 2010 04:13PM

For those idiots who think the public will pay for online content...

http://www.observer.com/2010/media/after-three-months-only-35-subscriptions-newsdays-web-site

Here's what's going to happen. A good chunk of newspapers are going to go out of business. Sorry. But that's the way it is. As that happens, online advertisers will gradually spend more on sites that generate eyeballs. The newspaper business needs to get over this. It's reality. Most of the papers in your industry are fucked.

It is an idiotic decision. No way this pay for content will work in the end. Too many people view the internet as a source of free information.

This will backfire in the end.

Blessed are the murderous.

Newsday was stupid to take the plunge in the first place. Only a handful of publications might be able to get away with paid content. Shitty Newsday certainly isn't one of them.

I think magazine subscriptions are the only ones that could pull this off. For every site that requires a fee, a few free sites will pop up to replace the paid content.

Blessed are the murderous.

I can't wait until the NY Times crashes and burns. This is awesome. Rupert Murdocks' Financial Times is destined for the same fate. Raising your prices in a depression sounds like a bad idea.

I hope this is the litmus test for things to come. These fuckers think just because they have lost circulation they have a right to screw us via the internet...fuck that! Use more banner ads or whatever on your content site and leave it at that. Or go the ESPN route: have free broadcasts of games, video, and story recap highlights, but charge the $2 dollars for in depth articles, opinion pieces, and other content.
