Guns of Navarone

Great movie on TCM tonight...though one scene was a little dated. They showed an SS officer using enhanced interrogation procedures....pretty light stuff actually considering the last republican administration redined torture. And dont forget some people (called republicans) would have us still using those techniques.

I was watching Greys Anatomy and thought how much better the show would be if they had government run health care.

Guns of Navarone is one of my favorite WWII films of all time. It's a great movie. I wish I knew it was on ahead of time.

They made a sequel called "Force 10 From Navarone" with Harrison Ford back in the 70s. It was silly and did no justice for the original, but still a fun movie if you like war flicks.

Well, it's just a movie. I don't think anything we call "enhanced interrogation" can hold a candle to what the Germans did during WWII. Hell, the Nazis can't even hold a candle to what the Japanese did during that time.

What I wrote was awkward, that's not what I meant. I meant that I wish I knew it was on TV because I would have watched it.

Funny. I had the "Guns of Navarone" play set when I was a kid...

I wasnt making a comparison between what the real nazi Germany did...just the depiction of it in that particular movie. In it's day even that rather mild scene was meant to portray a society that embraced torture...and comparing that to today. Within the context of the movie I think it is a fair statement.

You could have gotten almost $100 on ebay for them. Oh well, I took a sledgehammer to my Commodore and they still fetch good money.

Blessed are the murderous.

Torture is fine if it is involved in gay BDSM type stuff. We do some of that at the County Democratic Club meetings.

I recently watched "The Big Red One". It had been a while since I'd seen an old WWII film and I noticed that now I don't enjoy them as much, because of the lack of realism.

There was a scene where a guy machine guns another guy from about 6 feet away and there wasn't a drop of blood on the guy that just had 25 tommy gun .45 bullets pumped into him. Add to that, the guy was still standing afterwards and just sort of slowly fell over and down the hill.

A week ago, I watched Band of Brothers again in HD and it was great. War is nasty and bloody and that's how it should be portrayed in film.

Band of Brothers is the best WWII "movie" ever, IMO. I've seen every episode more than once and it's still intriguing enough that I would watch it again.

Guns of Navarone isn't really a war movie though. It's more of an action/thriller movie about covert intel ops that takes place during WWII. It's a tense drama with good characters versus evil characters, unlike Band of Brothers which is a true war "movie" where the main characters are battling the nameless, faceless German army.

For best WWII movies, I'd have to go with Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers (though it's a miniseries). Award winning movies from the past, such as A Bridge Too Far and The Longest Day, look ridiculous today in comparison.

Be advised that HBO will soon be hosting another mini series called "The Pacific" (I think) about the pacific campaign in WWII. Made by the same people as "Ryan" and BOB.

I'd have to put Das Boot and Black Hawk Down on that list.

I was referring to war movies in general, I forgot he was talking about just WWII.

My favorite war movie is Fires on the Plain...it's a Japanese film, which is really beautifully shot, and it's interesting to see the Japanese point of view--those guys were lead to the slaughter in the last days by the emperor. Even after the war was over, they were marooned in the jungle, resorting to cannibalism. The film Downfall is also great...it shows Hitler as the fucked up psychopathic failure of a person and a leader that he was, rather than some kind of boogeyman as he's kind of become in popular culture.

So what exactly is the difference between a psycopath, and a boogeyman?

Allow me to add "Where Eagles Dare", "Patton", and "Tora! Tora! Tora!". Oh yeah, Audie Murphy flicks as well.

Also, "Flags of Our Fathers".
