When the news of a potential sexual allegation against Brett Kavanaugh first surfaced 10 days ago, Tucker Carlson said that a GOP congressman said that if the GOP allows unsubstantiated and unprovable charges (and, at the time, anonymous) like this to derail a nomination that otherwise is going to go through, Republicans will never be able to seat another supreme court justice. The democrats will just bring women or minorities forward with specious charges every time and the GOP will cave.
The republicans are playing right into the democrats hands. Trump won because evangelicals turned out for him (in spite of his personal problems) based on his promise of putting people like Kavanaugh on the courts. If the GOP caves, the evangelicals will not turn out for the midterms and they'll be handing congress to the democrats. That's, no doubt, what never-Trumper asshats like Flake and Corker want, but they'll be decimating the GOP for a decade and Trump will still win reelection in 2020. Insanity!
