Just great, we are sending our fire/rescue to Port Au Prince Haiti. How much will they repay our county for the costs associated with this reckless project. Nothing I am sure of that. Stay in Fairfax, and provide services to those that pay your salaries. We cannot save the world Sharon Bulova.

That island has been fucked over for centuries. Conquered by Spain, bought and sold by France to England, etc. It's where the slaves were dropped off and told to be free. Then the U.S. took over for a few decades, and we still fuck with their politics.

Despite that, they're our neighbors and have no quarrel with us. The people who live there just experienced a major disaster. Give them a break.

actually.....Since Fairfax County Fire and Rescue is used as the base for FEMA Virginia Task Force 1 (VA-TF1) ALL costs bore by the county are reimbursed for FEMA.

When I say ALL costs I mean ALL costs.....everything from transportation, time away from work, paying the guys when they go and also paying overtime to backfill their positions.

In the end having VA-TF1 staffed by FCFRD is a huge benefit to Fairfax County. Since Fairfax doesnt have to front any money and has the people and equipment to do urban search and rescue. This is a precious resources that MOST area fire departments are simple not equipped to handle.

Fairfax County FRD as VA-TF1 is one of only two urban search and rescue teams that are allowed by FEMA to work overseas. Just to put that in perspective every state is supposed to have at least one team and most states have more than one. VA-TF2 is based with Richmond Fire if i recalled correctly.

It's called doing a good turn for our neighbors. This is the kind of assistance it makes sense for us to give them, and no doubt the US Navy will send some ships with supplies and helicopters to get in and help with assessing damage and rescuing stranded folks. It is the least we can and should do.

FEMA pays for the equipment they use. They replace all the supplies used while on deployment. Not a dime is spent by County to deploy the team. Even the people who have to do OT to fill in for the deployed staff here in county, their money comes from the FED, not the county.
Which means we have a highly trained, capable, and equipped team in our backyard, at literally no expense to the county.

I was watching MSNBC this morning. They were doing a live interview with a reporter on the ground. One of the people in the studio in NY said, "The Presidential Palace doesn't look that bad. Only the dome fell down. But the rest of the roof looks fine."

The correspondent answered, "Well, it used to be a two story building."

Yeah, the people of Haiti should stop buying playing cards and be buying edible food, potable water, clothes, shelter, medicine, medical supplies, and a new hospital. There's stores ALL OVER Haiti that sell those things. I'm sure if you asked, they'd give some bullshit excuse like "the grocery stores and Wal-Marts and hospitals were flattened in the earthquake, along with our homes, possessions, and population."

If they made the mistake of buying playing cards in an attempt to distract themselves from the absolute carnage that Mother Nature has wrought, they should return them for a full refund and hire a doctor to help that poor lady.

I think that was the right figure. I saw a fleeting blurb on TV in passing.

But, all three of their hospitals have either been destroyed or rendered unusable. This article discusses it a bit:

America is largely to blame for keeping Haiti down, and given its history as a country founded on a slave revolt, it is no surprise why. American foreign policy has always been designed to punish those poor people - always has, always will. Read a book called Uses of Haiti - it spells it all out.

Seriously though, this article is rather stupid. This is nothing like Katrina, the response will not even come close to what should have happened with Katrina, so the comparison to Katrina is full and utter BS. Unless I missed something and we just made Haiti a territory that can vote in our elections. Honestly, other than saving people and getting in supplies, what are we going to do, ship in a bunch of the old formaldehyde laden campers for them to sleep in?

Obama quake response seeks to avoid Bush pitfalls

And of course, the article fails to note that in the tsunami relief, the Indonesians told us to stay the fuck out for the most part - the government there didn't want our help.

Obama should follow Bush's example and demonstrate the power of a good fly-over.

But, he should wait until tomorrow to do it.

It's not stupid because the Obama Administration anticipates what I have been saying....we will see Haitian boat people in Florida. If we fail to react in a timely manner, the Mariel boat lift will look like a Potomac Boat Club skiff race.

Yeah, what a shame. The President's Palace falls, in a country where greed, corruption and racism condemn its people to suffer in ignorance and abject poverty. Those few who make up the ruling class, those lighter skinned elite, live in luxury, while the rest suffer in overcrowded, disease ridden slums, rampant with TB and AIDS. With little or no access to education, many still believe disease is caused by magical spells.

I feel really bad about the President's Palace.

In a sad commentary, they could probably start with a bunch of bulldozers at the border to the Dominican Republic and head straight West, pushing everything in front of them into the ocean. That would be quickest way to clean up, and then maybe we could just get rid of Haiti all together.

I like the Heritage Foundation's take on it:

http://www.heritage.org/Research/LatinAmerica/wm2754.cfm

Excerpt:

The U.S. should therefore do the following:

* President Obama should tap high-level, bipartisan leadership. Clearly former President Clinton, the U.N. special envoy to Haiti, is a logical choice and is already coordinating the international responses with the U.N. President Obama should also reach out to a senior Republican figure, perhaps former President George W. Bush, to lead the bipartisan effort for the Republicans.

...Cause NOTHING says "disaster relief" quite like George W. Bush.

That place is going to be the perfect breeding ground for infections, parasites, and bacterial diseases in a few days. It's a shithole as it is and now there's no power, no sanitation, no clean water, dead bodies in the streets, etc. It's going to be hell on earth.

Fairfax County serach and rescue team has been deployed. Thank goodness that teams with these capacities are going to help the victims of this tragedy. I noticed LA County has a similar team (financed by USAID not FEMA) as well.

That being said and at the risk of being insenstive, can someone explain to me why a county firefighting unit is in the business of responding to international disasters? Is this to build their capacity so they can respond to disasters in Farifax County? Do they have to call-up reserves to replace themselves when they're deployed overseas? Why isn't a private or non-profit group fulfilling this role/responsibility? Do doctors from our county public health group deploy overseas or do our county psychologists go to help families deal with the tragedy or loss? No, groups like Dr. w/out Borders or the Red Cross do that job. I'm not questioning the need - they're needed more than ever, but are county government workers paid to by local taxes to serve localities the one's who should be international responders? Seems odd and misplaced in my opinion. Then again, if/when these experienced workers dig me out of the rubble at home, I may appreciate it more.

Regardless, contribute to some of these orgs (Red Cross, Salvation Army, etc.) and help the Haitian people.

You don't sound insensitive. Just stupid.

Haiti has experienced a nearly unprecedented natural disaster. Tens of thousands are dead. Hundreds of thousands are probably trapped or in need of medical care. Millions are homeless. There's no water. No food. No sanitation. Virtually no medical care. Virtually no rescue capacity.

As for the groups that should be doing this, even at full capacity, groups like Doctors without Borders and the Red Cross would have their hands full. However, these groups lost a lot of people the quake. And, most of their people are deployed all over the globe with no means to quickly respond to Haiti.

There is nothing wrong with FFX County and other local jurisdictions helping out until additional capacity arrives in the coming weeks.

President Obama asked former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton to team up to lead the U.S. relief efforts in Haiti.

Obama called Bush Wednesday night to ask if he would join with Clinton, sources said, and the White House could announce the arrangement as early as Friday.

Clinton, who is the United Nations special envoy to Haiti, similarly partnered with Bush's father, former President George H.W. Bush in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami.

From a future news report...

Upon observing the devastation that blanked the Haitian capital city of Port au Prince, George W. Bush remarked, "President 'Ears' told me Hades had great golf. I don't see no golf course!"

Agreed. I can't believe how callous and selfish people can be. Fairfax's disaster team is specifically trained for this type of disaster relief. There are only a few of these teams in the whole US. They have cadaver/buried victim locating dogs and equipment that the Haitians simply don't have.

Katie Couric: President Obama issued the following response, "Uh, George, uh, how is the uh, 57th state, uh down there, uh? Are uh all the uh asthmatics uh getting their uh breathalyzers? Uh good uh luck and uh sorry for sending uh fatass uh with you. If you uh think uh he is uh a pain in the uh ass, try uh dealing with uh his wife."

Bush should decline to do it. When they find out how bad it really is there and how we will be accepting refugees and whatnot, Obama will blame Bush. Katrina all over again - making Bush the scapegoat for Democratic ineptitude.

Okay, the guy who talks about eating children has set me straight. I understand now that our county govt should double as an intl. relief agency - gotcha. I don't believe that their responses haven't been limited to unprecedented disasters though - they seem to be deployed a lot.

There are only an estimated 40,000 intl. non-governmental organizations in the world, so thank god for our lil' ol' Fairfax County fire and rescue team. With your logic, we should send our police to keep order and our water authority to help with clean water and sanitation, too.

These NGO's are ready to deploy and store foodstocks and relief supplies regionally to respond fairly quickly (e.g. RC has a regional center in Panama - not that far away), dumbass.

You know nothing about the RC either. More than 60% goes to victims, but any agency has a lil' thing called overhead (logisticians, shipping costs, transport vehicles, staff to manage the programs & funds, communication costs, etc.). Cost out a charter flight or 1000's of metric tons of relief items or the cost of vehicles and fuel to transport the stuff...
