The children should be killed in front of their parents so they won't feel separated from them. Then the parents should be killed, and it should be broadcast on cable/satellite TV. This should be done right at the border, within 2 days of being captured.
Make sure the show is available for everyone (esp. Mexico, Central/South America, etc.) to watch. The message needs to be clear: The United States is not a good place to run to or to send your kids to. Fix up your own fucking countries.
An additional series would be the ride-along show where ICE tracks down illegals already in the country, and removes them to the border. There they have a chance: they can run south and nobody will shoot them or anything, or they can attempt to invade once again, and wind up on the Killing show above.
Meanhile, we should deploy AI powered drones and automated machine gun killing robots -- thousands of them -- to secure the land borders. And beef up the Coast Guard, and, yes, intercept every vessel that crosses the line. (U.S. boats can have a transponder, so that they are subject to less regular boardings.)

Instead of calling and treating them as illegals, we should call and treating them as refugees. Make them UN refugees. Put them in a UN refugee camp on the US border.
In UN refugee camps - families stay together and are treated humanely. Each can apply for asylum in any number of countries, their situation and background is thoroughly reviewed and vetted, and they can be placed in some country that is willing to accept them. There are millions of people living in UN refugee camps all around the world.

The closest safe country is where they are supposed to get asylum. That would be Mexico.
Build the refugee camps in Mexico, close to their border with Guatemala. They will be safe there in Mexico.

Regardless of where the refugee camps are located - it should be a refugee camp run by and funded by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). That is how you handle this.

Just label them as refugees and then put the problem in UNHCR's hands and make them pay for it, run it, and give them a deadline to get it done ASAP.
