I believe Kim always intended to initiate rapprochement with the US, but he had to get rid of anyone who would oppose it before hand, hence the many purges. I believe Kim’s intentions are to gradually transition the nation to a free market economy with a very limited form of democracy at the municipal level while also opening the country up to extensive foreign trade. There will be no reunification with the South because that would benefit no one.

I doubt Jung Un believes in the Juche bullshit that his father and grandfather did. And as a younger man, he is probably curious about the rest of the world.

He'd like to stay in power. He would be a fool to give everything up for free elections and the possibility of being tried for his atrocities. Slow reform will protect his life and riches and move his impoverished nation out of laughingstock status.

South Korea would welcome a peaceful neighbor to the South but if they reunified, South Korea would be the one paying and getting fucked.
