Enough of the Hollywood Remakes!
Posted by: ebert ()
Date: December 28, 2009 12:55PM

How sad it has become. These are the few I have heard are in production or rumored to start soon.

Karate Kid
Red Dawn
Romancing the Stone
Total Recall
Robocop
Yellow Submarine
Footloose
Clash of the Titans
Arthur
Back to School
The Dirty Dozen
Conan
Short Circuit
Poltergeist
Logan's Run
Barbarella
Highlander

Some of these films shouldn't be touched and some sucked the first time around.

That news breaks my heart, there's no way they could ever improve Robocop. Makes me want to drive my 6000 SUX off a cliff.

Instead of taking movies that were good as is such as Robocop, Conan, Highlander, Arthur, etc. and "improving" them to the point that they're another movie altogether withe the same name, why doesn't Hollywood concentrate on:

1. Making decent original movies, or
2. Not half assing movie ideas that have potential. GI Joe and Transformers could have been "good" if more than 10 minutes of planning went into them.

How do you remake Total Recall? Logan's Run?

The new Clash of the Titans is just going to be a bunch of CGI and no plot.

I was just discussing this with some friends last night. Instead of screwing them up with a remake, why not just do what Disney does with their classics on DVD? Remaster the originals, with improved audio and video quality, and re-release the originals to the theater. No new scenes or CGI, none of that George Lucas-Star Wars BS. Just the original movie, with state-of-the-art production quality.

I heard that one of the studios is in pre-production for a Mask remake. Evidently, Rosie O'Donnell is going to play Rocky Dennis...no make up required.

I think Logan's Run would actually be good for a remake. The themes are pretty timeless. I'm afraid with Total Recall, though, today's producers would be too stupid to leave the ending open to interpretation. The remake would end with a pull-away of Vin Diesel, or whoever plays the Arnold role, still in the machine at the end. It WAS all a dream.

Booooo!!!

Clash of the Titans sucked. It wasn't Harryhausen's best work, so a remake wouldn't bug me.

The reason people still like the "original" versions is because they're the goddamn original versions. The only remake I've ever seen that actually improved on the original was the new "Dawn of the Dead."

Hollywood hasn't figured out that SLIGHT ADHERENCE TO ORIGINAL PLOT + ATTEMPT TO MAKE MOVIE MORE "REALISTIC" + MORE CGI SPECIAL EFFECTS does not equal SUCCESSFUL REMAKE.

Predictions based on movies I'm familiar with in the OP's list:

Karate Kid (ok, and I watched the trailer, too) - clever new martial arts techniques based on household chores, heavy on "urban" appeal

Romancing the Stone - More explosions and hot women

Total Recall - More explosions, more guns, no three-boobed-women.

Robocop - More explosions, bigger enemies, someone trying to deliver catch-phrases with the same verve as the original Robocop (but failing), overly-complex dissertations on Robocop's origins

Footloose - heavy on "urban" appeal

The Dirty Dozen - More explosions, shaky camera battle scenes

Conan - CGI everything

Short Circuit - Overly complex dissertations on Johnny-5's origins, up-and-coming child actor

Poltergeist - CGI everything

Logan's Run - Explosions, fight scenes, etc.

Highlander - They wouldn't dare. Dear God, please stop.

I'd actually like to see a Total Recall remake--but only if they forgot the Arnold version and tried making an adaptation of the Philip K. Dick story it's based on (I think it's called 'Now Remember Last Year'). They did a good job with A Scanner Darkly, but then again, that was kind of an indie film.

No, Wil Smith, Jr. and Jacki Chan. How many movies can Chan make with a black man and have them be succesful? Oh yeah, it stopped after Rush Hour.

No, the Chinese invade Detroit. As if Detroit is worth invading. Let them have it. They might be able to churn a profit for the auto makers.

No, think more annoying, like Russel Brand. Russel Brand playing a drunk. Does that even qualify as acting?

Shit. I just pulled O'Bannon's name out of my ass. I had no idea he had just died. The guy was an under-appreciated visionary. If it hadn't been for him, there would have been no Alien and probably little appreciation for the works of Philip K. Dick. Wonder if the guy will even merit an In Memoriam at the Oscars.

If it is Sandler or Stiller, it will be the whole fucking "man child" thing that these two have played to death in their movies. An interesting take would be Ricky Gervais. Unfortunately, Gervais has the box office drawing power of Olympia Dukakis, so that won't happen.

The Arabs invaded Detroit a long time ago and established a foothold.
Diversity didn't help the auto makers then and the Chinese won't

It has been 20+ years for most movies on the list, ergo, moms or dads, familiar with the original, will take the kids to see new Karate Kid (Columbia Sony), Fraggile Rock, Smurfs (WB), or Mrs. Doubtfire II.

Some disturbingly interesting movies in preproduction or production now include several films based on old TV shows. Brace yourselves. The list includes Good Times, Magnum PI, Kung Fu, The Munsters (Wayan Brothers), TJ Hooker, The A Team, Six Million Dollar Man, Smurfs, CHiPs, Fantasy Island, Dallas, Hawaii 5-0, and It Takes a Thief.

Remakes or sequels in production aimed at an all new teen audience include Rosemary’s Baby, Revenge of the Nerds, Baywatch, Sharkey’s Machine, The Blob, Ghostbusters III, The Incredible Shrinking Man, and Forbidden Planet.

And Superhero movies like The Green Hornet (Columbia), The Justice League (WB), HE Man (WB), Sub Mariner, and Thor will be out in 2010 or 2011.

Happy Theater going!

Ghostbusters III? I can't imagine who would play the cast, as most of them are in their 60s now.

I'd actually be interested in seeing a reboot of the A-Team, as opposed to a silly remake (Starsky & Hutch) or a just pointless one (GI Joe, Transformers). I like the casting: Liam Neeson as Hannibal, Bradley Cooper as Face, and Rampage Jackson as B.A. Some guy I never heard of named Sharlto Copley is Mad Dog -- had they looked for a bigger name, I think Steve Carell might have been a good choice for that role.

Sherlock Holmes was fucking great, but the Clash of the Titans looks like it's going to be a CGI fest with a paragraph long script.

I had read somewhere the actual Ghostbuster team would be new guys, but "mentored" by some (or all) of the original cast. The 2nd Ghostbusters was shit, but they'll plow ahead anyway and get somebody like Steve Carrell and Zach Galifinikus (sp?) to be the new guys.

Here is a new one for you

In 2007, a sJon Spaihts script titled ‘Passengers’, landed as #3 for best-unproduced screenplay. Keanu Reeves’ Company Films was on board to produce this sci-fi tale but it wasn’t until recently, when the script was green-lighted by Morgan Creek, that it would be made into a movie.

Keanu Reeves will take the lead role, James G. Robinson (‘Ace Ventura’, ‘Georgia Rule’ Major League II, Robin Hood) will produce, and Gabriele Muccino (‘Seven Pounds’, ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’) is in talks to direct ‘Passengers’. Muccino is expected to start shooting the film this summer though the location is still unknown.

‘Passengers’ is a sci-fi romancer, set in the future on a spacecraft making a centuries-long interstellar voyage to a new planet. Due to a computer glitch, a single passenger (Reeves) awakens from cryogenic sleep 90 years before anyone else. Faced with the prospect of growing old and dying alone, he, in turn, awakens a beautiful woman.

The Karate Kid movie.
Remake with the SAME NAME.
COMPLETELY different plot.
White boy, Ralph Machio(because italians owned slaves also) is replaced by the white hating(even though he's at least half white himself) Will Smith's sorry, girly-lookin', corn-rows wearin', son of his.

Bravo Will Smith!
You could have at least changed the title a little bit.
But thats okay WHITEY. Barack Hussien Obama doesn't like white skined people either (just read his fuckin' biography or look at the HATE SPEWING NIGGER church he attended for 20 years), even though he is half whitey himself, with a CRACKER momma and all.

So we ain't mad atchya Willbur. Keep churnin' out the crap movies!
Ya fuckin' reverse-racist faggot.

This new and degenerate work was coarse, bold, and wholly lacking in delicacy of detail. It was countersunk with exaggerated depth in bands following the same general line as the sparse car-touches of the earlier sections, but the height of the reliefs did not reach the level of the general surface. Danforth had the idea that it was a second carving— a sort of palimpsest formed after the obliteration of a previous design. In nature it was wholly decorative and conventional, and consisted of crude spirals and angles roughly following the quintile mathematical tradition of the Old Ones, yet seemingly more like a parody than a perpetuation of that tradition.

It was intended to be an ironic gesture toward the person who makes all those blisters comps with really poor Photoshop skills.

You have nothing to worry about, Mr. Tuttle. Indeed, your work is the Photoshop equivalent of an obnoxiously handsome man.

I was thinking of the crude yet strangely compelling images created by this undoubtedly sick man (is that figure on the far right perchance a Picasso-Las Meninas reference?):

Even though you are a promiscuous harlot, you are much too kind...

I thought you may be referring to that particular picture... I always thought you were responsible for it?

(is that figure on the far right perchance a

If you made it, maybe...
if not..... NAAAHHHH!

By the bye, did I ever tell you about the great Poker Night Incident at Misery's house?

"Four aces!" Mr. Misery (Jr.) said, laying his hand out on the table.

eesh said, "That ace of hearts is one of my discards...".

The other three guys playing (including Yours Truly) started to slide their chairs away from the table.

Misery said, "There's a bullet hole in your shirt."

eesh looked down and Misery shot him near the third button... Then, again, in the face for lying.

He's a regular chip off the old block, ain't he?

P.S. Thank you for the Bazooka Joe reference...

P.S. People are saying that, well, everyone's saying that I gotta move on.
They're saying that a relationship of... our particular nature is "unacceptable."
Darn you Tuttle, I wish I could quit you.

Is that so? Well, everyone tells me that they don't understand what I see in you... They all say that you're no good for me... That I don't act quite myself when I'm around you... They say you-... They say you bring out the worst in me....

I simply tell them to eat a sock and die.

I don't wish to quit you... I wish I could join you in your white room...

Damn you! Why do you always push me away!?

That is "Mr. Robinson" to you. Even his closest business partners of 20+ years are required to call him "Mr. Robinson".

Even Mick Jagger was required to call him Mr. Robinson on the set of FreeJack.

It is a James Brown thing. Before James Brown entered a room, his handlers would make the announcement instructing all to refer to him only as Mr. Brown.

How the flying phugg can you possibly remake "The Dirty Dozen"? That's a classic, don't mess with it. Before you know it, they'll try to remake Dirty Harry.

Let's hope this Robin Hood is way better than the Kevin Costner version.

I grew-up on the Costner version, and I always liked it, but Russell Crowe could make this the most bad assed version ever. If Gladiator is any indication of him taking on this genre, then I think it'll be a winner.
