I think I need a root canal

I have a tooth that has bothered me for 2 years. Anytime I bite down on it I get a shooting pain that puts me out of commission for several minutes and usually a bad headache occurs. The other day I bit down on it and it hurt more than ever before. Now I have a continuous throbbing pain that won't go away. I went to a dentist last summer who couldn't find anything wrong with the tooth. He suggested I go to an endodontist. I called to schedule an appointment and they said they can't tell if the tooth is cracked unless they start a root canal. So I scheduled a visit for next week. I'm scared to death. What is wrong with my tooth and does a root canal hurt?

Get a pair of pliers and pull the sucker out. Go to youtube, they will show you how to do it.

Not sure wtf “can't tell if the tooth is cracked unless they start a root canal” means, a crack would be visible on the exterior of the tooth.
And no, a root canal doesn’t hurt. They’ll numb your entire jaw for it. And the whole purpose of a root canal is to remove the nerves leading into your tooth. So even after the novacaine wears off, you will no longer have any nerves there to feel anything. It’s not an enjoyable procedure, mostly because you sit there with your mouth open for 30-45 while the dentist is prodding around and drilling, but there is no pain during or after it. Honestly, i thought getting my tooth grinded down for the cap was worse than the root canal.

My dentist couldn't find a crack and the X-ray looked perfect. He referred me to the endodontist because he said they have microscopic instruments that can see small cracks. The lady setting up the appointment said they wouldn't know if there is a crack or not until they started a root canal. Doesn't make sense to me either but she's a receptionist who should make appointments and STFU.
All I know is I have constant throbbing pain that is nearly unbearable and my gums and teeth look great.

You need a second opinion before anyone drills. No drilling until you know there is a crack.

if you cannot do it yourself you'll need 'professionals' to do it for you (i'm not saying pull teeth i mean the whole round trip from diagnosis to treatment)
You need to do it A MONTH AHEAD OF TIME and are already late.
you cannot get an "emergency dentist" - dentists don't give a flying fuck how much it hurts - they will do "regular cleanings" on schedule even if your dying of pain. you can get "numbing" helpers at CVS but they are dangerous to use and for temporary use only.
