Can you join the army with asthma?
Posted by: Wannabe at West Point ()

I came to America with my family as refugees from What is now South Sudan. Were it not for America me and my family would be dead. We love America and all learned English, learned and embraced American culture and consider ourselves Americans.

I want to repay America by serving in the Army and go to West Point. I would run towards death for America. The problem is I have asthma, and while it is under control I fear it will disqualify me from serving.

I’m a sophomore and have a 3.4 gpa. I speak several regional dialects as well as Arabic and I’m learning French. I want to put my knowledge and hard work ethic to serving America. Could I still do this?

Asthma and US military service is no, sorry.

You can try to enlist, if you get in cause they don't find it, and take care of your own asthma med issues you may be able to hide it, volunteer for the hardest missions, if you get in a firefight and earn a Silver Star or higher you may get a chance to go to West Point if you show leadership under fire, the President can grant a waiver to anyone

I'm confused:

Here it says generally with asthma you cannot serve, unless you have not needed treatment after your 13th birthday. However many people who have only needed to use an inhaler occasionally are considered to be "cured" of it. Does this count?

In the old days (10 years ago or so) you were automatically disqualified if you had any history of Asthma or other bronchial disease. The military has relaxed its standards and will give waivers to serve if you've "outgrown" your asthma, which is defined as having no symptoms after your 13th birthday and if you pass the battery of tests given by the MEPS docs.

They will check your records but they won't have complete access to all of your records. Be upfront and honest when they ask you if you have a history of any respertory conditions. You can still get a waiver if after a chest x-ray and other tests the MEPS doctors determine you can participate in PT.

Lie and best case, you get caught and face punishment, worst case you get an asthma attack and die in basic training. Best of luck young man.

Aside from being a pilot, you could probably join the Air Force. Yiu can show off your skills sitting at a desk and collecting unit coins.

Actually, the best anal prolapses occur after joining the army...

You should axe your recruiter.

Here you go, OP. A PDF is attached in my post.

The regulation that covers medical standards and potential disqualifiers is AR 40-501. The most recent version is dated June 14, 2017.

Asthma is covered on page 13 of the regulation, paragraph 2-23.

Having a criminal record is also a disqualifying factor. For misdemeanors, a waiver can be obtained, but I'd love to see the look on your face when they Google you. Sounds like going back into the Army won't be an option. LOL

Young man, there are other ways to serve. If you have the language skills you say you have and the grades, you can join the State Department and become a diplomat. Only real health requirements you will have to meet is be of proper weight and be and good enough physical fitness to serve worldwide. FBI and Secret Service would also take you too.

There are many ways to serve your country. And while serving in the armed forces is no doubt an honorable and most direct way of doing so, it isn't the only way. I'm so happy to see immigrants like yourself come to this country and actually willing to accept the culture and the ideals and wanting to protect them. That is something special, and you are a true American. Don't give up hope and work hard. You will go far here.

"Googling" is not part of the military entrance criteria. Eesh's only conviction was for horn-honking, which is a relatively minor offense, and even that is mitigated by the demonstrable fact he was stalked, threatened, and provoked by the very same people he honked his horn at. The fact that the Morenos had been posting death threats to eesh, trespassing in his backyard, harassing his witnesses, and continue to make libelous statements about him makes it very clear that the Morenos, and not eesh, are the bad guys.

Dude, it’s actually very commendable that you love America, but I don’t understand why you want to join the army with asthma. This is just nonsense and a step towards suicide. It is likely that you will be sent to serve in hot spots and at any time you can begin to suffocate. This is probably the stupidest idea I have heard, and I hope that the military headquarters are not so stupid as to take you to the service. My friend has asthma and cannot even run. He decided to buy inhaler online and his inhaler was nearby always. Despite the new composition, the inhaler lasts no more than 5 hours. So I advise you to forget about the army!

Peace Corps. Interpreter for the State Department. College Professor. You don't have to serve military to MAGA USA. Jump on the Trump Train when it plows through your town soon.
