I am wondering if it will do me any good to start the VASAP class before my court date. Also, should I take a driver improvement class?? Trying to curry some favor from the judge.

dont bother. if its a "regular" dui the judge will most likely stick with mandatory minimums.

I got charged with DUI at .08 and got caught with some weed that he found after he detained me. Didnt get my car towed supposedly because I parked it legally. I hired a lawyer he recommended me to do ASAP but I chose not to and ended up getting assigned to ASAP, amended the DUI to a Reckless and dropping the weed and illegal lane change. I feel like it wouldnt have helped my chances either way but who knows.

Are we assuming the charge was DUI? Was it?
If it was a reckless, then definately take the class. Maybe get some proof of getting substance abuse help. ASAP definately helped in my reckless charge. A lot.

I blew a .17 at the station. It was a DWI - but in Va DUI and DWI are one and the same. My lawyer said I shouldn't bother but I find it hard to believe it wouldn't curry some favor.

It really doesnt help if you take the class. Take the class so you can get a head start in putting the mess you are in behind you. But if you think because you take the class early it is going to reduce/lower your punsihment you are wrong. You will have to take ASAP anyways so like i said, take it to get it over with.

ASAP isn't like the driver improvement course. The ASAP course can take months and months. It's up to the ASAP people how long you stay in the course.
I had a buddy that (apparently) pissed his case manager off and she had him jumping through hoops for over a year. Antabuse, AA meetings, the works.
Plus ASAP is part of the sentence for DWI. I doubt any judge would appreciate you trying to dilute his/her authority.

I think the judge might think youre being proactive. It could only help.
