Drivers see I-66 tolls fluctuate frantically, top out at $34.50
Posted by: What a fucking SCAM! ()

The politicians that let this happen should be lined up in front of a firing squad! Filthy fucking slime that enrich themselves at the expense of the working people!

From the WTOP website:
Drivers encountered fluctuating tolls along the new Interstate 66 express lanes inside the Capital Beltway Monday morning. The highest the tolls went was just over $34 for the 9-mile stretch. The tolls will be back in effect during the afternoon commute.

Definitely agree the politicians should be shot, but this time at least it isn't their greed at fault. It is their poor stewardship of a public resource. The politicians want a private company to pay for improvements to I-66. The amount of traffic that would use an I-66 toll road outside the Beltway would be much greater, and the profits to the private company would be much greater, if the drivers using the I-66 toll road outside the Beltway could continue using 66 inside the Beltway. So fuck the citizens.

It's outrageous.
Also, there is talk about making other roads in the county "toll only" within 10 years .. the Fairfax Parkway?
more HOVs and more "hotlanes". Braddock Road, one segment at a time?
For now there is "talk". This expense just to go from A to B in the area will spread as will the sprawl.
It's a real M Fer for those who are lower middle and on down on the income scale.

Increase the gas tax and don't toll the roads! Everyone that drives uses the road. Taxing gas taxes everyone that drives. Makes sense to me!

lol people get tricked into thinking tolls arent tax. Republicans would never allow a nickle per gallon tax on fuel because its big government now the constituents pay 70 dollars round trip to get to work. By they way this is what the new GOP tax bill is on a massive scale. you will be paying out of pocket for whatever trump doesnt sell to his rich friends.

fucking idiots.

Why are you lying again? Will you be a man and admit your lie? Nah, I bet you'll be a pussy again.

First, this project was a Terry McAuliffe idea and implemented by his Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Layne.

Second, the Virginia Department of Transportation owns and operates and maintains the I-66 Express Lanes Inside the Beltway.

Tolls will be used by VDOT to operate and maintain the lanes, and then will be reinvested in the I-66 Corridor to help fund multimodal improvement projects such as new transit routes and park and ride lots to provide commuters with new travel choices.

When Terry McDouchebag runs for President, he'll be wearing that $35 toll for ten miles around his neck.

It is the continuation of a plan that has been implemented by both Democratic and Republican governors. A toll for one road may have been approved by a Democratic administration. The toll for another was approved by a Republican. While Republicans have been in control of the House of Delegates for most of the period when northern Virginia has been adding toll roads, control of the Senate has been split. You cannot blame either party without blaming the other.

sorry but this is THE feel good story of the day. Used to be the bulk of road costs were included in the state and local taxes you pay. Now the taxes stayed the same but we need new roads so its privatized so you pay for the roads PLUS a guaranteed profit to a company. And people are all like ' hey 34 dollars!'

lololololololol

Pay attention dumbfucks, your country is being sold to the highest bidder and you are not saving money you are being fleeced for much MORE money. Rich people dont care about 50 dollar tolls - hell they still get to write it off in their pass through corporations while being taxed at all time low rates. Meanwhile chumps making $150-$200 per day in gross wages are paying 1/3-1/4 of their gross income on tolls alone!

Even better, NOVA pays so much more than we see back from the State and we are the ones getting whored on this. Its all just funny as shit.

And yet again...the 1%-ers are pulling the wool over the masses while the masses fail to realize THEY have all the power.

If we want those tolls to end...for all drivers? Stop...using...the...express lanes. Just stop. Sit in traffic. Leave earlier, stay later. Move closer to work. Work a telecommute job. There are lots of options to avoid paying for those lanes.

If we ever woke to the real power, OUR power...we could...shut...those...lanes...down. Corporations, an Australian corporation no less, are depending on the toll revenue. Just say no.

You have lived with your commute as is. Accept the status quo and in a few months, the lanes will be open for all.

Sorry too late for a boycott friend - the Commonwealth has guaranteed return to the private company if drivers dont pay taxpayers will provide a nice profit for the company anyway. Part of the deal

You are right about having power but its at the polls. People have to stop Hating government and stop thinking all tax dollars are gobbled up by welfare queens driving Cadillacs eating lobster. Taxes build roads and schools. Taxes on gas have not kept up with inflation since the 80's.

So now we pay for the improvements and we pay a profit to a third party and we lose control of our own land and infrastructure. Giving our country away.

Stop listening to the GOP anti taxers. Its a long con for redistribution of wealth.

The thing to be angry about here are the extended HOV hours. The toll otherwise doesn't impact anyone negatively that it shouldn't have. If you have another person in the car with you it's free. This was also the case before...

Now previously it was illegal to be in the car solo, unless you had a hybrid that was still allowed with the appropriate tags or were going to/from Dulles Airport. However, now you can be solo in the car if you pay the toll. What's hard to understand about that?

Bitch out HOV hours expending or airport traffic being disallowed.. but in general if you are paying the fee... you are now legally driving a road you weren't allowed to previously.

What's ridiculous is that an infant qualifies as a rush hour passenger. It's not as though they're keeping another car off the road.

From VA's HOV law/FAQ page:
http://www.virginiadot.org/travel/hov-rulesfaq.asp

Q) "I'm pregnant. Do I count as one person or two?"

A) In the HOV world, you're one person. Babies of any age, however, count as a person.

But I've never heard of this... I'm sure people will start lying about it to cops. !

"Exceptions to the rules ...

2. Motorists traveling to and from Dulles International Airport to go to the airport to board a flight or to pick someone up at the airport are permitted to use I-66 inside the Beltway (I-495) during HOV hours. Motorists traveling to or from Dulles International Airport are not exempt from HOV restrictions on I-66 outside the Beltway (I-495). You are not permitted to use I-66 inside the beltway during HOV hours if you are going to the airport to eat, get coffee, get gas or any other reason other than boarding a plane or picking someone up at the airport."

Since you can be charged for the murder of an unborn child, it seems like the law is treating unborn children as persons with rights. I think this needs a legal challenge.

Here I have another fucking idea. Widen the fucking road and make one lane a hot lane only until it pays off the loan. Let those rich snobs that dont care about money pay for its expansion.

The real reason we are like this is because of degenerate Republicans milking NoVa for decades. They build roads to no where while we sit here without critical infrastructure. Even though those Republican leeches need us to be productive to leech off of us.

Being that you are retarded, we don't expect you to get it. You just need to make sure you keep your helmet on at all times.

The higher the toll the better. Those of us who make a good living don't care about the cost only the convenience.

WTOP reported today the toll peaked at $40. The VA Transportation Secretary essentially commented that the tolls mirrored exactly what they were designed for.

Guess what Gerry. That position was appointed by your boy Terry McAwful.

Live with the truth GerBear. Democrats are fully responsible for this mess.

The simple solution is more commercial office space in the burbs and beyond. Lots of technology firms could set up shop further west but the high paid CEOS all live inside the golden belt ( mclean , dc , arlington ect.) and don't care how far their worker slaves have to travel.

We have plenty of office space in the burbs I assure you. At issue is where millennial want to work - it aint in the burbs. They want vibrant urban settings with climbing gyms, hipster eating establishments and they want mass transit and bike lanes and coffee shops. In a way its the suburban development's poor planning that has cursed it. We build places like Tysons Corner where you have to take your life in your hands to walk a half a mile to a store let alone ride a bike.

Elsewhere, we lack affordable apartments and condos for millenials to nest in. DC has done a pretty good job of combining mass transit and walking neighborhoods along with bike lanes. You want to attract young work force to the burbs you better supply infrastructure including bike lanes, light rail, and places where you can live and walk to work/coffee/hipster vinyl stores. Auto transportation is so 1950's and we better figure a way to move people more than one person per auto - its stupid.

Yes, let the government set the housing pricing. Moron. Millennial like yourself live in a dream land, until then have fun sitting in traffic for 3 hours a day until you have worked hard enough to live in that eutopia you speak of. 60k a year workers aint paying for that dumb ass.

It's not the tech firms, it is the Feds. We need to just get over a centralized government. Put the USDA in Kansas where they belong, put ICE in West Texas or Southern Arizona, put the IRS anywhere, FAA in Omaha, FBI and NTSB in Denver, EPA to Houston, etc. Modern technology allows for these massive organizations to be headquartered anywhere in the U.S. and still function effectively. Why should a GS9 endure a two hour commute from bumfuck Virginia or even Pennsylvania to work on a computer terminal connected to the commercial internet. F'ing ridiculous.

Where did anyone suggest government setting housing prices? What are you talking about? Also you seem upset.

Quite true - we live in physical space very differently now then earlier when everything needed to be physically close to each other. Would be a boon for local economies if you could move huge government operations to destitute areas. Cheaper for the government too with cost of living pay. Move IRS to Appalachia fuckers there would kill for 70k per year jobs if they could get off the Oxy.

one of the reasons that these taxes and tolls get passed so easily is that many of those who can afford to use the toll roads to get around in the metro area have government type jobs where all or part of their toll expenses get reimbursed in some way.

If someone else pays your expenses to get to work you won't even pay attention to the planning by your elected officials.

For the rest, try and get jobs outside the beltway in the areas where you live. Just say goodbye to the whole mess.
