I remember growing up in this area in the 80's. While attending Mary Washington, I'd go see my buddies street race in Manassas, after which we'd all go to various watering holes and get fucked up, maybe smoke some weed and pick up girls. I can remember a few times getting so faded i'd wake up in open fields, people's driveways and even a trampoline in a stranger's backyard once.

In my 30's, I was living in Connecticut and would commute to New York for my job at a boutique consulting firm. Almost every night after work, we'd go out for drinks, reconnoiter for loose women and do copious amounts of drugs. Work hard and play hard was the mantra of the industry. This went on for me until I got married at 33 and settled down in Falls Church to raise a family.

Things are different now however. I have three sons. one is 13, another 16 and my eldest 22. The younger ones go out occasionally to the movies with their friends, the diner and the occasional party. My eldest however, who goes to American hardly ever goes out. He stays in with buddies drinking beers, playing x-box and smokes a bowl or two. I asked him why he doesn't go out and socialize, to which he told me no one does.

I've talked to others with similar aged kids, and they confirm this is the new norm. Millennials (however you wish to define them) aren't going out anymore. They aren't socializing face-to-face anymore, and aren't going out to meet new people, unless it's on some app. They claim it's too expensive to spend $ on a pint, and entertainment in this day and age is lame.

My son summed up the collective sentiment in this way; "Fuck going out. Fuck "out." It's expensive, it's crowded, it smells bad, the bands are usually terrible, the clubs are usually worse."

Take him out to the AP trail or camping when it gets warmer .. canoeing, fishing, hiking .. the great outdoors.

You might have to bribe him or drag him along, but he will thank you for giving him a opportunity to clear his mind from all those fucking electronics.

Good suggestion. Haven't done that in awhile. "going out" doesn't necessarily mean going to a bar, club or other social setting.

Millennials are wise beyond their years. Dont regret all the partying I did though. We didn't go to the club and waste money though. We were the club and made money and the pussy was on tap.

Some of this deception is based on their generation being the generation of Social Media. They compete with each other over social media and also a lot of them have been coddled growing up and even as young adults in this era of "blame the other person" "do not take responsibility for your own bad actions or behavior" "extreme political correctness". They live as though they know better than older generations and so often take liberty, shortcuts and "freedom" which often actually sets them back.

They also take and show off more pictures of themselves than any generation in history .. some of this is due to technology .. the rest is due to just plain Narcissism.

Generation Z, overall is a more promising one IMO.
