Some of the notable firsts that happened on the ballot this election:


Virginia elected its first out-lesbian when Dawn Adams barely defeated incumbent Manoli Loupassi in the 68th District, which represents Chesterfield and Henrico County, along with the City of Richmond.


In Fairfax, Democrat Kathy Tram’s win in District 42 made her the first Asian American woman elected to the Virginia General Assembly.


Danica Roem became Virginia's first transgender legislator with her defeat of the LGBT community’s most outspoken opponent, Bob Marshall. Marshall held his seat in District 13 since 1991.

Two Latina women were elected to the Virginia General Assembly for the first time ever. Elizabeth Guzman won the 31st District with a 10 percent margin. Hala Ayala beat incumbent Rich Anderson in the 51st District.


Voters easily put Democratic Socialist Lee Carter House of Delegates into office in District 50. Like Senator Bernie Sanders, Carter ran as a Democrat but is a self-described socialist, in a district where Hillary Clinton easily beat President Donald Trump in 2016.

Justin Fairfax, the Lieutenant Governor elect, becomes the second African American to hold a statewide office. Former Governor Doug Wilder was the last.

Political analysts said the election battle would provide an early look at how the first 10 months of the Trump presidency have reshaped American politics and that the people of Virginia made it clear they reject Trump's "bigoted political playbook."

These are just the icing on the cake after Northam’s big victory over the Trump candidate. I think a lot of people are just getting sick of the bigoted white trash alt-right supporters who think trump is some kind of revolutionary tiki torch guy.

The kick back to Trump isn't really a Mandate as we have seen in the past in election cycles following Presidential elections.

It's rather a "suggestion", which will fade away with time.

But YES there will be real damage done before they leave office ....
The odor is drifting towards Virginia and we will have a few bad whiffs before it's all done.

The Democrat party should have been banned from the 2016 election for arresting Bob McDonald out of office and LOOSING IN COURT.

The fact they were able to spend freely to gain and enter a next election just speaks more to me that the REPUBLICAN PARTY IN VIRGINIA IS A FACADE.

The fairfax GOP I believe is infiltrated with democrats:

* outspoken democrats attend GOP planning meetings openly expressing they are democrats

* the head of the GOP in fairfax is known to hob-nob with Democrats / be a bit to friendly with them

* members stating they are R are from California and are active in promoting support of using taxpayer money to support illegals in fairfax

* the GOP in fairfax completely DID NOT COVER, absolutely skipped / hands off, the recent Fairfax City Council election where a Democrat one - a democrat who'd recently had been in south asia for 2-3 years preceeding getting a seat in office

* one of the chief DONORS of the R party is an asian, doesn't speak english, and has a local business starting off welfare money / government money

The candidates they pick are never from Virginia, never strong candidates, and never well backed since Bob McDonald. Also: Bob McDonald is from NJ, McAuliffe, also Gillespie. That can't be dismissed. You have to realize you pay $50 to become a voting member of the Republican party and that voting members pick which candidate will run.

I could go on and on.

Virginia Senate elections will be November 5th 2019 and Democrats only need one seat to take over. Shit, Democrats could control everything for the next redistricting. Time to reciprocate fully.

A host of new faces took their seats as newly sworn members of the House of Delegates Wednesday, and the chamber unanimously elected a new leader, Del. Kirk Cox from Colonial Heights.

The freshmen class of delegates has been praised for its youth and diversity, and several of new members have grabbed national headlines.

Del. Dancia Roem (D - Prince William) became the first transgender woman elected to the House of Delegates. Wednesday, before taking the oath of office, lawmakers from both parties congratulated and hugged Roem.

Del. Dawn Adams (D -Richmond) became the first openly lesbian delegate in Virginia history Wednesday. A record number of women now serve in the state legislature, a total of 24 this year tops the previous high of 19 in 2013.

As a star of Virginia’s 2017 elections, all cameras seemed to be on Del. Danica Roem, D-Prince William, earlier this year when she made history as the first transgender lawmaker sworn in to the General Assembly.

When the focus turned to the arduous work of taking up the 1,610 bills filed in the House of Delegates, Roem’s national profile didn’t easily translate to personal legislative victories. All 11 of her bills died in Republican-controlled committees and subcommittees, as did more than 85 percent of the bills filed by the 16 freshmen Democrats elected in last year’s blue wave.
