Federal oversight of subways proposed
Red Line crash spurred safety plan Obama administration to push for Congress to change law

The Obama administration will propose that the federal government take over safety regulation of the nation's subway and light-rail systems, responding to what it says is haphazard and ineffective oversight by state agencies.

Well, don't ever take Amtrack or airplane anywhere, as safety oversight of those is "nationalized."

Well, on the upside, adding another layer of government, it will create jobs - and make local commuting more costly.

I wonder if there is an increase in bus accidents, if buses will be nationalized too.

Most transit buses already take subsidies from municipalities. They are already "socialized"... why are you throwing up these red herrings? I get the whole thing, trying to label things with "nationalized" or "socialized" as if 1) those things aren't already in that condition and 2) that such a condition is or would be a bad thing in order to paint them as "bad."

Very simple-minded people post things like that... calling something that takes government subsidies or is already under government control "in danger" of becoming so looks dumb.

I'm surprised it's not already subject to federal regulations. WMATA has had a shitload of safety issues over the past few years, and as a frequent rider, I think this is a good thing.

For any of the pinheads bitching about a "government takeover" of metro, here's some advice: take your fucking car.

She probably wouldn't stoop to public transportation, yet paints further safety measures negatively for those that do. Dumb.

When I worked in DC, I used public transportation daily.

To mass nationalize all metro and light rail across the country because one system lacks oversight is absurd. But that is Obama's speciality.

Metro and light rail, across the countrym also take subsidies from municipalities and already socialized.

Your misplaced shock and awe is not working!

ha ha ha - love it.

I hardly think all the localities in the US with subways and light rail are on board with you .... NOT!

Like the FAA has such a great track record.

Metros and Subways are localized entities, and by Nationalizing them, the Federal Government is yet again taking one more step towards snatching away Non-Federal Authority. I wonder if the Feds will begin Taxi regulation next, then maybe they'll start regulating Car Registrations soon thereafter.

They're not taking over the systems, they're proposing national safety standards. Same thing they've done with airlines for decades (never ever heard retarded conservatives complain about that one).

it seems like a good idea to me... unless the safety standards are really poor.
