Multi-Vitamins

Do you take a daily multi-vitamin? If so, what kind?

I have been bad about taking vitamins and want to go get some. I am a man and I understand men should get Vitamins which do not include Iron. Women only need Iron as they lose it through their period.

Do you feel Vitamins are in any way just a placebo. Like if we have a normal, reasonable diet, we get enough as is? And these multi-vitamins are not a true necessity?

Do you feel the benefits of vitamins?

Basically, just tell me wtf to buy at GNC tonight. I am twenty'something and active. I want healthy looking skin, hair (but read taking Vitamin E alone was bad for you) and for my body to have all it needs to do it's thing in there.

vitamins dont do shit unless you are severely deprived of those nutrients. a 20 something like yourself doesnt really need those vitamins. as for your skin 15 minutes of sunlight a day is healthy. i think if you want to substitute sun for vitamins i think its the B group and D group.

I took vitamins religiously for a while, and never got sick. I ran out a couple weeks ago, and caught a cold a week and a half later.

You don't need to go to GNC or spend a lot of money. Just go get a multivitamin at your local grocery store. Get the one with the widest variety of vitamins in it. I'm partial to the orange chewable ones that taste like delicious candy.

Multi-vitamins are great during the cold season. I take a GNC brand everyday, and yes I do feel the difference. I have heard, like you said, vitamin E can be bad, but only in large quantities. I would at least get vitamin c. GNC sells some that are 800% of your daily value. Seems ridiculous, but your body flushes out a lot of C.

Blessed are the murderous.

You'll know if you're taking too much vitamin C if you get the shits.

Not a lot of people know that.

I take a Centrum multi-vitamin everyday after I eat lunch. My diet is normal (probably don't eat enough dairy or fruit) but I'm probably getting everything I need from food, I just take one anyway to make sure. The doctor said it doesn't hurt. I wouldn't waste money buying individual supplements at GNC, unless you like popping a whole handful of pills everyday. I've never heard anything about men not needing to take pills with iron, so I wouldn't worry about avoiding it. Centrum has 18 mgs of it, if your body doesn't need that extra tiny amount, it'll get rid of it.

Also, it doesn't matter how young or active you are. Vitamins come from what you eat. So even if you're 21 and run 5 miles a day, living off of fast food, pizza, wings, beer, soda, and donuts might still malnourish you.

"Men and postmenopausal women don't need the 18 milligrams of iron in most multivitamin/mineral supplements. Unless your doctor says you're low in iron, look for a brand with zero milligrams."

I used to take vitamins... I stopped taking them and the only thing I miss is my glow-in-the-dark urine.

Odd, that's the exact reason WHY I take them.

Oh and have you had blood work done lately? Many doctors are now testing for vitamin D deficiencies. It is very common now, especially for people that wear a daily SPF moisturizer. I don't take a multivitamin but I take 2000 IU of vitamin D a day.

Take a simple Centrum or something similar. Your body will absorb what it needs and then you'll piss the rest out in that radioactive yellow color.

Seriously, my doctor has never mentioned this, but it sorta freaks me out. I think I might throw my Centrums out.

As long as you don't eat more than one per day you should be fine.

I've taken a multi-vitamin most of my life. First Centrum. I now take the Costco Kirkland multi-vitamin (as mentioned above, men should take the 'silver' variety since it doesn't have iron).

On Vitamin D: Pretty much everyone is deficient. Keep in mind the current RDA is 400 IU. I was on 2,000 IU for months, when I had my D test done, and I was just barely above deficiency. This is the one vitamin pretty much everyone should be supplementing.

I've noticed this Vitamin D deficiency trend. I hadn't thought of the SPF moisturizer connection.

Maybe we need to get outside and allow a certain amount of unblocked sunlight. And, sunlight makes us happier.

RE: Vitamins with iron. I agree with "Pills".

Taking iron can be dangerous. Before taking iron, ask your doctor to run labs for hemochromatosis. This condition involves the build up of iron in the organs. Men are usually afflicted at an earlier age than women, since menstruation protects females from the iron deposits. The treatment for this condition is the removal of blood to keep iron levels at a normal range.

From what I've read, 30 minutes of (unblocked) sunlight during the midmorning or late afternoon should provide enough vitamin D without risking the health of your skin. However, that will vary on the color of your skin, your location, and the time of year.

Of course midmorning and late afternoon typically aren't very convenient times to be outside soaking in the sun's rays.

Most people are lax about their daily nutritional requirements when planning their meal plans. If you are stressed out; don't sleep well; eat on the run; eat fast foods; or do not routinely eat well rounded meals from the basic food groups, you are most likely deficient in some vitamins and minerals (Well rounded meals include 9 to 11 servings of fruits and vegetables in your daily meal plans, along with the appropriate amount of low- and fast-burning carbs and protein).

A good daily mulit-vitamin picks up the slack and rounds out your diet.

People with lousy eating habits and/or helth issues may need additional supplements. It's the additional supplements that should be run past your doctor, not the daily multi.

Even for healthy people, a multi will probably do more good than harm and money worth spending as a preventive measure.
