What happened was that during the Obama administration the question came up before the ATF as to whether bump stocks fell under the existing laws and regulations limiting access to automatic weapons. Since those laws and regulations have been drafted and enacted by numerous administrations (under the auspices of the NRA of course) not surprisingly the ATF found that it legally couldn't restrict the sale or use of bumps stocks. Unlike Trump, these people knew that the executive branch and its agencies have to follow the law and existing regulations, and they can't just do whatever they fucking please. The ATF did not authorize bump stocks moron. It found that it couldn't prohibit their sale and use under existing law.

I think Obama sucked, but the headline on this thread is seriously misleading. He didn't "authorize", he simply had no avenue to ban bump stocks (which I hadn't even heard of until this incident, and I'm fairly knowledgeable about guns).

I have seen crank mechanisms which fit in the trigger housing and make any semiauto into a Gatling gun. I've seen bidirectional triggers for the Ruger 10/22 which fire when the trigger is pulled and when the lever is pushed forward again. I've even seen kits where you take two Ruger 10/22 rifles out of their stocks and put them into a mechanism that turns them into a twin-barrelled, tripod mounted Gatling gun. None of these count as "machine guns".

I don't know what wording they'll use in banning "bump stocks", but the fact is, they are simple enough to be made outside of a factory. Laws won't keep all psychos from getting them, just the dumber ones.

Wishing won't make guns and gun violence go away. Ask the cities of Chicago and Baltimore if you don't believe me.

A "bump" device is a simple piece of plastic that is attached to the gun, and it's purpose is to keep your finger from getting damaged when you pull the trigger really really fast.
