Quality is good. Way overpriced. LL Bean gives better value

The alleged "quality" of those coats is blown out of the water by the simple fact that owning one makes you a douche.

I'll also go with REI or LL Beam products. Much higher quality.

My guess is there is a wide range of product lines and costs. Probably overpriced for the average FFXU poster, but if you watch any show about mountaineering, climbing Everest, etc. you see a whole lot of North Face clothing and accessories. I don't remember seeing L.L. Bean gear on mountain climbers, but it's decent stuff. Look for sales. I gotta $285 NF jacket with a liner at Macy's on sale for $85, good quality but would have never paid full retail.

Unfortunately, like many legacy brands North Face's quality and pricing have become greatly divergent. 10 years ago, North Face were premium quality goods at premium prices.

Now that they have become an enormous brand, they have continued to escalate their pricing while cutting a lot of corners on their quality and finishing. Things that were double-stitched are now single-stitched and fewer of their offerings are fully weather and water proof.

Jackets used to be made in the USA and had metal zippers. Now they're made in China with plastic zippers that can't be replaced.

There is already a thread on this shit. Look it up, it's pretty informative. To summarize what I remember about the thread, North Face is over rated, Columbia rocks.

Most zippers have always been made by the same Japanese company. YKK Zippers Japan. Look at your various zippers, over 80 percent of them probably say YKK on them. There are only two types of zippers, Japanese YKK or not Japanese YKK. American zippers or any other zippers are of less quality.

North Face were once good products.....in the ‘70’s. They actually made rugged gear for extreme destinations in the world. Now they are just a name brand for wannabes.

Im a rock climber, mountain climber and ice climber - North Face makes excellent gear. Its expensive but good. Also check Marmot, Sierra Design, Mountain Hardware. Both EMS and REI have very good house brands if you want to save some money but sometimes you get fewer features. Sierra Trading Post is a great place to get discounts on last years stock or discontinued/overstock.

If you are just walking around Fairfax and not heading out into the wild you really do not need expensive gear just head to Marshals or Target and get what is on sale. I have jackets from the top name brands that have literally saved my life and still work after 20 years.
