When I was growing up I was warned not to become "just a statistic". But I was told that someone I knew, or that I would, most likely be sexually assaulted by the time I was in college. I was told it was my fault. The way I acted, who I associated with, and/or the way I was dressed.

But it can happen to anyone. Any age, any gender, any background, any place, any time. And it is NOT YOUR FAULT, regardless.

I was molested when I was around 8 years old, by a friend's uncle. I didn't understand what was happening at the time, and buried it deep deep down. I became increasingly depressed as time went on and never understood why until I confronted it as an adult.
I was sexually assaulted and abused dozens of times when I was in a relationship with a man almost double my age when I was 15. I still have the scars he left on my body, mind, and soul. I never reported it and he is still out there and (as far as my knowledge goes) is an active member of the military.
I was sexually assaulted again in October of 2015 at the age of 19, drugged, bruised, clothing torn, full of shame. I reported it but was told it was a he said/she said situation, and even though there was physical proof of what happened I was told I wouldn't have much luck. So I dropped the case, and fell even deeper into depression. I turned to alcohol to numb the pain, and lost a lot of myself.
And as recently as this summer, by someone I thought was a friend. I am still processing it.

It hurts. It hurts to live with that pain every day, it hurts to be plagued by nightmares all the time, it hurts to remember what happened, it hurts to think about other people who have experienced the same, it hurts to know it happens all the time.

You're not alone.

& We, as a society, need to work together to make a change. Bringing awareness to the issue is the first step.
We are survivors. We need to share our stories with the world. We need to make things better.
