Pennsylvania Energy Company Opens Second Coal Mine

The head of a Pennsylvania-based energy provider said Sunday that the Trump administration’s environmental agenda has allowed him to open a second coal company since the election.

“I think it’s a direct link,” Corsa Coal Corp. CEO George Dethlefsen told Fox News reporters, referring to the upturn in the coal industry’s fortunes and a slew of environmental regulations President Donald Trump recently peeled back.

“The war on coal is over,” he added. Dethlefsen opened his first office this year in January near Pittsburgh, which is expected to generate as many as many as 100 new jobs. A second mine was shuttered five years ago but is expected to reopen in early 2018.

Trump made resuscitating the coal industry a key part of his presidential campaign.

Coal saw a slight rejuvenation recently. Coal exports were nearly 60 percent higher in the first few months of the Trump administration than at the same time last year, according to federal data.

Exports declined dramatically during the last half of the Obama administration, but now economics and political factors have collided to put some wind in the sales of the once-fluttering industry.

Coal companies exported more than 22 million short tons of steam and metallurgical coal between January and March 2017, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported in July.

Or maybe 100.

Plus the guys who run the sandwich shop down the road.

And some guys who haul the coal.

We all hope Trump really does create 100 coal jobs. But we worry you are just being taken advantage of, and will be dissappointed.

One exec is. Because he wanted Trump to unusually invoke emergency authority in order to try to save a power plant that's on the verge of bankruptcy anyway.

"It's not an emergency to bail out one company," a person familiar with the matter told CNNMoney.

The aid Murray sought from Trump involves invoking a little-known section of the U.S. Federal Power Act that allows the Energy Department to temporarily intervene when the nation’s electricity supply is threatened by an emergency, such as war or natural disaster. Among other measures, it temporarily exempts power plants from obeying environmental laws. In the past, the authority has been used sparingly, such as during the California energy crisis in 2000 and following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The Obama administration never used it. The Trump administration has used it twice in seven months in narrow instances.

Murray’s company is seeking a two-year moratorium on closures of coal-fired power plants, which would be an unprecedented federal intervention in the nation’s energy markets. The company said invoking the provision under the Power Act was “the only viable mechanism” to protect the reliability of the nation’s power supply."

Trump's base doesn't believe in bailouts. Hopefully, neither does he. Not for big banks and Wall Street investment houses. And not for coal either.

Trump should level the playing field for coal so that it has a fair chance to compete as a source of energy. But that's about all he should do. Let the consumer decide.

If the field were level coal would not stand a chance against competing fuels. Coal is holding on only because there are plants in this country built years ago which cannot burn anything else.

More lies from the left. Entire towns were going to shut down here in WV before Trump decided to save our jobs and homes and let us work again.

Ha that's hilarious!!! Believe it or not my 17 yo has a forge in the back yard and heats and beats re-bar into tools and knife and axe blades. So far he's made a pair of tongs, a knife and several hatchet blades. It's noisy and stinks but he's working his ass off and is not involved in drugs or other risky behaviors. So what's not to like? FWIW Trump had nothing to do with his interest in forging but I'm glad he is ahead of the curve.
