Here's how Trump's council of business titans fell apart

LOL. The guy is an embarrassment to not only this country but the human race.

Sunday night: PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi began to ask other members about whether the Forum remained a good idea.

Sunday night/Monday morning: General Motors CEO Mary Barra and IBM CEO Ginni Rometty joined Nooyi in calling the other members and gauging the reaction to Trump's comments.

Monday morning: Merck CEO Kenneth Frazier quits an unrelated council of manufacturing business leaders, prompting a wave of departures from that group and ramping up public pressure among the other members of Trump's various business groups.

Monday afternoon: Trump's statement Monday condemning white supremacists and neo-Nazis cooled the nervousness of the Forum's members.

Tuesday afternoon: The straw that broke the camel's back. Trump's wild press conference walked back much of his statement from Monday and was seen by many as support for some members of the white nationalist protestors. "They were appalled by what has happened since Charlottesville and yesterday was the tripwire," one Forum member told CNBC.

Tuesday evening: Calls began again between members. Barra, Rometty, Nooyi, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink decided they will leave the Forum if it is not dissolved.

Wednesday morning, around 3 a.m. ET: Schwarzman requested all Forum members join a conference call in the morning.

Wednesday, 11:30 a.m. ET: On the call, the members agreed to end the council. As many as 10 of the 12 members on the council agreed.

Wednesday afternoon: Schwarzman got in contact with the administration to inform them of the decision, according to Bloomberg the Blackstone CEO spoke with White House adviser Jared Kushner.

Wednesday 1:14 p.m ET: Despite the CEOs coming to the agreement to disband the group themselves, Trump preempts a joint statement announcing the end of the council and tweets that it was his decision to end the Forum and the manufacturing council.

This in fact is not going well. I had hoped he would simply golf out his term, and not really do anything. Wouldn't have been so bad.

But he is hell bent on getting impeached, or getting Amendment twenty-fived.
Then we will have millions of Trumptardz rioting, blowing things up, killing themselves with grape koolaid, and all that nonsense.

Trump doesn't know what the fuck he's doing when it comes business or government. That's how it fell apart. Trump got rich off businesses that rely upon suckers: i.e. casinos, a non-accredited "university", beauty pageants, and putting his brand name on crap like perfume and airline peanuts. Do you honestly think he could run a business like SpaceX or General Motors? lol, he's a goddamn joker, not a business leader, and those CEO's all know it. Put this guy in charge of anything halfway important and this is what you get. That's why his "industry councils" failed.

It only took three months for all the CEO's to learn Trump was a fraud and toxic.

These are men and women used to working with difficult people in difficult situations - it is remarkable for them to give up on the President of the United States. Not sure what is up with Trump - I dont think he is stupid. It seems like a mental illness or severe personality disorder. Its weird that he has gotten this far.

As for his supporters, I think they are mostly a collection of losers and bigots at this point.

I can imagine showing up at one of these Trump "industry councils" is alot like going to a timeshare seminar. Some barely-tolerable asshat bragging about stuff and trying to make a sale out of you. It probably wasn't a happy prospect to begin with, now throw all the racist nazi crap on top and it becomes something they really want to avoid.

Things take time to happen - as that article quoted - the new jobs were the result of an expansion planned a year ago. The 2017 increase in production was a result of 2016's economic activity.

I think it speaks volumes to the greatness of Obam's economic policies that even an industry to which he felt a great deal of ennui should prosper under his leadership.

You mean like Bill Clinton and Alan Greenspan's real estate asset bubble that popped. Gotcha.

That must be why coal production dropped from a record level of 1,171.5 million short tons in 2008 to 728,232 in 2016.

lol

And actually it has little to do with "economic activity" which you've just pulled out of your butt. It's mostly due to higher demand for steel production in China and a shortage of met coal in world markets which has made it more economically feasible to export US met coal.

Yes, I understand that you have no clue what met coal is.

I'm not a commodities trader.

But it sounds as though the Chinese anticipate a surge in exports to the rest of the world, presumably including the US. Guess they aren't concerned about the efficacy of Trump's tarrifs.

Oh, and the factors you listed are, indeed, 'economic activities'.

You just need to know WTF you're talking about.

Wrong again. That's what happens when you're just parroting dumb talking points. It has little to nothing to do with *US* economic activity.

It's mostly related to China's own internal demand and activity. Which isn't as great as it was but they've massively over-built their steel production (and other manufacturing) as a part of government-directed development and jobs programs so they can't just turn it off. Which has resulted in large excess in production, which then hits world markets and has created a huge glut of cheap Chinese steel over the last 20 years or so. All of which ties back to the matter of tariffs since effectively what's happened is that the Chinese government has greatly subsidized its steel industry in order to support jobs there at the expense of jobs here and across the rest of world (if you din't know, we're not the only ones considering and implementing tariffs on Chinese steel).

tariffs, then they can't get rid of their steel, and at some point have to stop refining it, and then - no more demand for coal. QED

It's not primarily a matter of demand but rather of (over) supply. There already is inadequate demand *there* relative to over-supply that they've driven *elsewhere.* Which has caused world steel prices to be artificially low worldwide for an extended time period which has killed off the steel industries elsewhere.

If it were a more fair market (i.e., more at economic equilibrium), then while US coal *exports* to China might decrease (or not, lots of other factors involved related to type and quality, etc., and it's more served by Australia anyway); steel production *here* and in rest of world will become more economically feasible again. Which then drives more demand for increased *US* met coal *here* (where Australia doesn't play and we don't import much) and elsewhere that we export.

That is, if supply is decreased and demand stays at whatever natural level, then steel production becomes more naturally priced and production becomes more evenly distributed again. Which translates into more *US* steel production, more *US* met coal production to service it, more *US* steel and met coal jobs. In the same way that the tariffs that Obama imposed on Chinese steel, tires,
and some other products, which I'm guessing that you're not aware was done, are intended to work: http://www.bbc.com/news/business-36319141

But that all relates to steel production/met coal and not steam coal which is the bulk of US coal production and subject to an entirely different set of economic circumstances centered mostly around competition by nat gas and power plant regulation.
