I doubt anyone here has a real problem with wale, just a problem with your shameless dickriding of the man.nuff said.

This thread has prompted me to dip into John Wednesday's tunes posted on myspace again.

Impressions: pretty impressive skill in song construction, elegant chord structures, but mostly falling a couple of notches short of real melodic inspiration, save for a few striking moments. with the latter providing a sense there's something going on there, on the melodic front, that could blossom, given time and cultivation. several of the melodies and singing patterns sound vaguely familiar or derivative, not offensively so, but nor particularly welcome.

impressive production skills. given somewhat limited means, as inferred from remarks on this board, really achieves some very nice effects, both with electric and acoustic guitar, and other instruments. impressive feel for and skill in creating a variety of expressive, musically interesting architectures of sound (e.g., the way the reverby electric guitar drops in behind the acoustic strumming on "that look").

not virtuosic, but no small degree of instrumental musical skill/chops.

lyrics - mostly fairly workmanlike, but sprinkled with some striking fresh lines and phrases.

vocals - a bit thin, not a wonderful instrument, but not lacking in feeling, and at times rather, and occasionally quite effective. a sense of still "finding his voice," and learning to make effective use of it within its limitations.

conclusion: some real talent, but my crystal ball remains cloudy as to whether that talent will remain on its present plain, wither, or, one hopes, blossom.

(and by the by, it would be very interesting to hear these production skills applied in a rigorous way to the best two or three songs of our much photographed friend from richmond.)

apropos of i'm not sure what, the following lines come to mind:

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

This is probably the best feedback I've ever received. Friends won't tell you where you're deficient for fear of hurting your feelings, and people who don't like you tell you that you suck because, well, they just don't like you.

Thank you.

I'd be interested in reading The Softchew Review of the MySpace version of your song, "Consummate".

I'd rather they go to www.johnwednesday.com, as the mp3s on there aren't run through shitty MySpace compression. It really allows one to hear all the awful, subtle details.

I almost completely re-did that particular song, and make a production changes to "That Look." I cleaned it up a bit, and renamed it to the less-awkward "Whitlow" on johnwednesday.com.

I am trying to find other people that would like to perform and inject their artistic ability into my work. I know I don't excel at any one aspect of the songwriting process, but I'm good enough at them all to at least put a song together. I would love to see what would happen with a talented guitarist, bassist, and drummer.

I'm working on it.

EDIT: This past February, I took part in a challenge to record ten songs that month. "Four to Blow" was one of the better songs from the ten I came up with. I haven't done any work to it since I wrote/recorded it back then, except shorten it up a bit.

I happened to listen to Float for the first time in a long while. Hearing it gave me a small warm feeling, like meeting an old friend. At the same time, an undertow of resistance, or wariness -- from the naked sentiment, from wondering if the water fx are a bit too much, wondering if the song as a whole is a bit too much. But I think it's good, even very good. It moves me. It even - one hesitates to say this - makes my eyes well up a little.

So, very good. Listening, it struck me that what it lacks, that would put it over the top, is a great voice -- a John Lennon circa Jealous Guy. The voice as is does work, and works rather well. But a really beautiful voice - not pretty like McCartney, but beautiful like Lennon - would put it over the top. But that's only so, the fanciful notion only crosses my mind, because the words and melody are strong enough to carry such freight.

Just some quick thoughts.. /emo /candor, etc.

feel the same way i did about float as i did (almost exactly) three years ago (gawd, has it been that long).

a fully realized, beautiful song -- a little work of art.

listening this time (8 or 10x in a row, actually), the voice works for me. (last time around, the exquisite studio version of 'jealous guy' was stuck in my head.)

i really like the lyrics.

i like how your delivery of "screaming" resists the temptation to go over the top. There's a true, complicated feeling in that delivery; you have a nice "touch".

"inside your heart, grey as the clouds above"

that is a beautiful line -- a beautiful image. love the delivery, too.

one thing - the ending felt a little abrupt. not a big deal.

have you noticed that the people who listen to that nigger shit, are very low IQ ? Listen to some kids talking about rap music and most are barely literate. It's "music" performed by low IQ people, and listened to by low IQ fans.
It's really kind of sad.
