Fake Shutters on Front of Houses Only

Riding through FFX and noticed most people have fake metal shutters on the windows in the front of houses but not on side. When I grew up my house had real, very heavy wooden shutters on all the windows. I was tasked with painting them more than once and I assure you they were stout and functional able to swing on a hinge and be closed over the windows in the event of a storm (we never once did this).

So if people are going to screw cheap metal shutters on their houses why only the front - it looks cheap and stupid.

Houses in NOVA are not built very well. We are lucky brick was local or these shitboxes would all be falling over. Metal shutters look better than cheap windows most houses have.

They are not on sides because cheap people here can barely afford the 650k it takes to own shitty 4 bdrm split levels. Pathetic

I have lived in houses built in the 30s, 50s, 60s and 70s that all were built with fake shutters. If they had been real they would have been of little use, since they were not large enough to cover the windows. I suspect that houses in this area that have functional shutters seldom close them.

The shutters on most were only on the front of the houses. again this is a long term trend. The reason why they only put the shutters on the front is the same reason why many homes have brick front walls and siding on the rest. The buildings are intended to be viewed by the public from the front only.

Why do they put the fake shutters on upside down?

Ironically with real functional shutters the louvers are pointing up when not closed. When you swing them closed the back side of the shutter is now protecting the window with louvers down.
