Personally, I think Trump simply doesnt care. I doubt he gives a scant thought to the lies he tells or the duties of his office beyond their practical application to his business concerns.
The big disconnect people sense with Trump is that the duties of President of The United States of America are a mere adornment to Donald. He doesnt take the duties of the office any more seriously than a giant pair of gold painted scissors. He has everything he needs or wants materially and seeks only to amass more wealth and especially more publicity as a fighter, a winner - that is the sum total of his motivation.
The fact that he has so much power and responsibility over millions is our fault not his and he has no intention of 'owning' that, he is just along for the ride.
