Is the private sector harder to work in than public sector?

I always here people say in regards to government workers "they wouldn't be able to survive the private sector", and hear people lambast those in the public sector as lazy, incompetent, dumb. Is the private sector really that much more difficult to work in than the public sector?

I did 17 years private sector and 8 so far public sector.

Private = more money and more work only a few weeks paid leave and expensive health insurance.

Public = Less money, lots of paid holidays, cheap health insurance and 7 plus weeks of paid leave a year and a laid back work environment.

Overall the govt jobs give you more enjoyment out of life but you will never get rich.

If you climb up to a high enough pay-grade within the government, you can become ridiculously wealthy. The work/life balance decreases a bit however.

^^Very true.

And no, you will not get rich on government pay. The top pay for GS-15 step 10 in the DC area is only $161,900. SES pay is a little better but still only about the same as an entry-level job at a large law firm. The easy work, time off, insurance, and job stability are the reasons to work for the goverment -- not the money! (Pay is higher at agencies like FDIC that get funding from industry.)

We government workers don't have to generate the revenue the private sector workers do. That's why the quintessential government worker looks like Chris Christie.

One time I did nothing for 22 months and nobody noticed. But I only make 90k a year so I really should not be doing much of anything.

Spend 10 years in Government learning acquisitions and get certified.
Learn the ropes. Build a network within the Government and with the industry partners who bid on the acquisitions you manage. Work hard and get shit done - honestly and by the book without any compromise to morals and ethics or the law. Build credibility and integrity. Be the go to person who makes shit happen. Solve problems. Be bold and decisive.

Then go out into industry and you will make bank. Sky is the limit. If you can win contracts, drive revenue, and bring in profits - you will be king. Hell, you can start your own firm and bring in millions.

This is a model that has been proven to work over and over and over again.

You didn't specify what type of work. Attorney? Economist? IT? Rubber stamp operator? Degree required?
