11 Victims of Free Speech

By Christopher R Rice

I've been writing about our freedoms being slowly stripped away and there are so many glaring examples I thought that we should put some of them together for you.

1.) Student suspended after sharing picture of discolored water in school bathroom

When a student at a school in Michigan saw a problem with the water at her high school, it made her upset.

So she took a picture of the discolored water and posted it to Facebook and Twitter.

But the very picture she thought would bring about change actually got her suspended.

I don't know but that kind of sounds like what I've been told Russia is like but this happened in Michigan, right?

2.) UC Davis student sue over pepper spray at protest

UC Davis students who were pepper-sprayed by campus police during a sit-down Occupy protest sued the officers and university administrators in federal court Wednesday, claiming excessive force and suppression of free speech.

The Nov. 18 demonstration became a rallying image for the Occupy movement around the country after a video showed UC Davis officers, one identified as Lt. John Pike, dispassionately spraying the stinging chemical into the eyes of seated students at close range.

3.) TV reporter fired after obscene tirade against police officer in viral video

Philly Mag reported Tuesday PHL 17 reporter Colleen Campbell was fired after she was arrested outside of Helium Comedy Club Sunday night for assaulting a police officer. The incident was caught in a now-viral video posted on social media by New York-based comedian Wil Sylvince.

4.) NFL reporter fired for 'unprofessional' anti-Trump tweet as politics invades sports

On Saturday, NFL reporter Bart Hubbuch lost his job at the New York Post. On Monday night, he revealed why.

Hubbuch said he was fired from the Post, where he worked as a sports reporter since 2007, for a tweet comparing President Trump’s inauguration to the terrorist 9/11 attacks and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Here's the thing, if you can be fired for your tweets what good is your free speech? It's like being blacklisted in the 1950s by Joe McCarthy for being a commie. So you can have "free speech" and say anything you want but you will not be able to get work. That sounds exactly what they told us about Russia when we were too young to know any better. Truth is America is not free, we are really slaves.

5.) Man arrested for writing 'kill that pig' about police officer on Facebook

The comment that caused the most concern. A man going by the name "Gee Ross" typed the words "kill that pig."

"It didn't take long for police to track the man who they say made the threatening comment. With the help of the federal authorities, he was arrested Monday night, and is now behind bars waiting to be brought up on charges.

6.) Selective Enforcement Between Former Cop and Cop Critics Making Online Threats

In Massachusetts, the Chicopee Police Department decided within hours it would seek criminal charges against a man named Charles Dirosa for posting a Facebook status that read “Put Wings on Pigs.” a reference to the statement made on social media by the man who killed the two NYPD cops.

11.) JUAN WILLIAMS: I Was Fired for Telling the Truth

Yesterday NPR fired me for telling the truth. The truth is that I worry when I am getting on an airplane and see people dressed in garb that identifies them first and foremost as Muslims.

This is not a bigoted statement. It is a statement of my feelings, my fears after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 by radical Muslims. In a debate with Bill O’Reilly I revealed my fears to set up the case for not making rash judgments about people of any faith. I pointed out that the Atlanta Olympic bomber -- as well as Timothy McVeigh and the people who protest against gay rights at military funerals -- are Christians but we journalists don’t identify them by their religion.

People have a right to free speech.

A company has the right to dismiss those who say and do things that are against the company's best interest.

Those companies have the right to unilateral decide what those things are.

In the real world, words and actions have consequences.

Staying employed at a place is not a right.
