The bodies of several Navy sailors — missing after a collision between a U.S. destroyer and a massive cargo ship near Japan — were found inside their submerged vessel, officials said.
Search and rescue crews discovered the remains inside the Fitzgerald’s flooded berthing compartment early Sunday.
It was not immediately clear if the bodies of all seven missing sailors were found.
A Navy statement said only “a number of” remains were found. But the Wall Street Journal reported that all seven bodies were located.

The grim news came hours after the damaged destroyer limped into its home port.
The Navy ship collided in the dead of night with a container ship four times its size off the coast of Japan early Saturday.

Three crew members, including the ship’s commanding officer, Cmdr. Bryce Benson, were airlifted from the vessel by Japanese military helicopters during the ship’s slow 16-hour trip back to Yokosuka Naval Base south of Tokyo.

“All three sailors are awake and will remain under observation at the hospital until further notice,” the Navy said in a statement.

The Philippine-flagged ACX Crystal was berthed at Tokyo’s Oi wharf, where officials were questioning the crew about the cause of the nighttime crash.
The Navy said the collision occurred 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, home to the 7th Fleet.
“Right now we are focused on two things: the safety of the ship and the well-being of the sailors,” said Adm. Scott Swift, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

U.S. and Japanese vessels and aircraft searched the seas near the incident for the missing sailors.

The names of the dead sailors were being withheld pending notification of their families.
“Thoughts and prayers with the sailors of USS Fitzgerald and their families,” President Trump said on Twitter. “Thank you to our Japanese allies for their assistance.”
The Japanese coast guard said it received an emergency call from the Philippine container ship reporting the collision at around 2:20 a.m.
The Fitzgerald suffered extensive damage above and beneath the waterline on its starboard side.

The crash damaged two berthing spaces, a machinery room and the radio room, according to the U.S. 7th Fleet.
Most of the more than 200 sailors aboard would have been asleep in their berths at the time.
Water was being pumped out of flooded areas and it was unclear how long it would take to get into the crushed mid-right side of the ship.
“This has been a difficult day,” said Vice Adm. Joseph P. Aucoin, the commander of the 7th Fleet. “I am humbled by the bravery and tenacity of the Fitzgerald crew. Now that the ship is in Yokosuka, I ask that you help the families by maintaining their privacy as we continue the search for our shipmates.”
The Fitzgerald’s captain, Cmdr. Bryce Benson, was airlifted early Saturday to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Yokosuka and was in stable condition with a head injury, the Navy said.

Two other crew members suffered cuts and bruises and were evacuated.
There were no reported injuries on the container ship, which is operated by the Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen K.K.
The bow of the massive 730-foot-long long ship was dented and showed a few scrapes.
The incident is being treated as a case of possible professional negligence, said Masayuki Obara, a regional coast guard official.
