Trump had convened Republican leaders at the White House for a conversation about their legislative agenda, largely on health care and the debt ceiling.
But during the meeting Trump also suggested his border wall could be built with solar panels as a way to pay for it, according to sources familiar with the conversation.

Trump was meeting with House Speaker Paul Ryan, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Whip Steve Scalise and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Whip John Cornyn.
In a joint statement, McConnell and Ryan called the meeting "good, productive" and "focused on ... how we can accomplish our goals."

Use of solar power has been suggested previously and is a very good idea. Solar power is good especially for remote areas with no electrical distribution lines.

What is stupid about using solar power? Especially where there is no access to the power distribution grid? Building power lines and infrastructure just to support the border sensors, telemetry, and communications links would be much more costly.

You wouldn't necessarily need to cover the wall itself in solar panels. A few solar panel farms at intervals would work. With appropriate sensor and response technology, the wall needn't be that substantial. Aerostats and long duration UAV platforms can provide reconnaissance and track threats approaching the border as well as the location of any successful infiltrators. In some desert regions where sensors can detect anyone approaching from either side within acceptable response times, the wall itself could be a simple fence or double layer fence.

It's is a cute idea but it skips past some huge hurdles. Securing all the land for a border wall is difficult (some of it is parks, much is privately owned), and construction along much of that route will be hugely expensive. Constructing a huge solar array alone will be HUGELY expensive, moreso than just a bunch of concrete, and then it has to be maintained. And it still has all the draw-backs of building a big-ass wall (won't foil drug runners, nor illegals who fly here and over-stay their visas).

I'm all for beefing up border security but drones and such have come a long way - spend the money on them. And if you still want to build a huge solar array (also sounds like it'd be worth the money), build it in proximity to some large urban center so you can pipe the energy right to them.

My fear (and I'm sure, other's) is that this is nothing but a coat of paint on a huge con job, that it'll never work, be hugely over-budget, and end up paying some friend of Trump's huge construction money. And that they know this and don't fucking care - it sounds like something clever, and by the time we figure out it's a con job, they'll have claimed victory and moved on. We'll be out tens of billions and the wall will never do what it's supposed to do.

Solar panels need upkeep to be cost effective. You need to clean and repair them regularly. Lining them up single file for two thousand miles in remote areas sounds problematic. There's already a river there at the Texas border. But I like your idea. Build the wall and put a water barrier with deadly critters in it just behind the massive, 40 foot wall. Then build a secondary solar wall with an set of electric cable on the top so you can't breach the barrier with any kind of portal bridging devices.

There will need to be sensors to detect digging, vibration, and breeches, as well as cameras to detect things approaching the wall and using artificial intelligence to determine the level of threat. There will need to be communications lines connected to operations centers and alerting response teams when appropriate. Many parts of the border are not served by power lines, yet have plentiful sunlight. Using solar power for the wall makes sense.

It is baffling why liberals would want to build out the power grid and string high-tension lines across the desert, with possible adverse effects on the environment, when there is a more efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly solution.

The coal wall is still the best way to go. It'll create more jobs and reduce emissions.

They can still put in trenches where it's needed, for water and such, but a solid wall does more than a trench can. it's more security.

The only problem with a coal wall is it will only take a little bit of lighter fluid and a match and it will all burn away and turn to ash.
