Leave Afghanistan or More Troops?
Posted by: Lopter23 ()

So we just keep sending more and more troops over to Afghanistan. The same strategy that the Russians used. Is the answer more troops over there?

We've been there so long now and not won the Afghan people are started to hate us.

What's the solution?

I'll let you know when Obama makes his decision. Whatever he does it the right course of action.

They should pull out of Afghanistan all major operations except those intended to keep Al Qaeda on the ropes.

As it stands there is no definition of "win". Even let's say that a win strategy would be to rout Al-Qaeda and establish democratic reforms in Afghanistan - is it worth it? In my mind Afghanistan isn't worth it. We were justified attacking them for harbouring Al-Qaeda after 9/11 but we are not justified to continue our presence there on the current scale let alone a vastly enlarged entity. I would much rather be using that money for other more fruitful endeavours.

If you've got an hour, watch Frontline from last night. Good stuff. I think it's time to leave, but there's risks to that too.

Time to play possum. Pull back and announce significant draw-downs. Stage flights out of the bases to make a show of it, then when they come out to attack kick their asses.

Does it make sense that we have to advertise every time we are sending more troops into the area? What better way to make the rats scurry for cover if they think we are actually going to be coming their way.

I'm sure we'll be able to break the tradition of every invader getting their asses kicked by the Afghanis. What's a couple thousand years of practice against a UAV?

That does look interesting. The trailer has a marine asking some locals "Who told you that the Taliban would shoot you for going to the market."

That's exactly what the Russians did and it didn't change a thing.

Why do people comparing our involvement in Afganistan with Russia's? Besides supierior numbers I don't think the Russian military out classed the US with respect to technology and capabilites. From my obsersvation the classic Russian military philosphy is something akin to "Square peg in round hole".

Arguably, much of the reason for the Russian failure was because of the US meddeling and supplying the Afghans with technology to fight the Russians. Who is supplying the Taliban with supierior technology to defeat the US? Iran? The Saudi's? Maybe they are supplying the Taliban with something, but I doubt its anything supieror.

Maybe we have been using the wrong weapons. Maybe go Apocalypse Now style on them. Strap some huge speakers on a couple of Apaches and have them fly around Taliban bases playing Meade Skelton full blast. That would have them surrendering in no time.

This is my take on the situation in Afghanistan. Al Qaeda was chased out of Sudan and ended up in Afghanistan. The Taliban basically tolerated Al Qaeda but didn't exactly want a bunch of foreign Arabs in their country causing more problems for them. Al Qaeda, with financial backing and volunteers from Saudi Arabia, staged 9/11. Bush asked the Taliban to turn Al Qaeda over to us. The Taliban didn't comply (probably because they couldn't as much as wouldn't). We went in there, bombed the shit out of them, let Bin Laden escape into Pakistan and have spent the past 8 years fighting people who had nothing to do with 9/11 while those responsible continue to hide in Pakistan and receive backing and volunteers from Saudi Arabia.

So why the fuck are we still in Afghanistan fighting the Taliban?

It is simple. The world cannot afford the price that will come due if Afghanistan slides back into chaos or al Qaeda operates unchecked.

Seems like the price has been pretty steep already. Part of the reason the U.S. is in the mess it's in is because we have been spending money we don't have to fight a war we can't win.

Well, apparently President Obama thinks preventing the backslide is the ultimate goal.

This is absolutely NOT the same strategy that the Russians used. The Russians shot and killed every moving target, without any mercy whatsoever. On the other hand, we have made a great deal of inroads in Afghanistan, and even during our worst moments there, we are still allied with at least half of the country.

If you think that leaving Afghanistan is the answer, just remember what happened the last time we did it in 1992/1993. Osama Bin Laden moved into the vacuum that WE left, and he helped to create the Taliban, their Al-Qaeda lynch mob, and during this entire process Wahhabism soon spread-out and proliferated throughout much of the Region. THEN, as a DIRECT result of that, we lost 3,000 of our people on 9/11. The math is very simple indeed.

Wars are only unwinnable by the United States, when politicians and opponents keep entering into discussions and issues where they do not belong. Allow the Military to do their job, and we can and will win any conflict on Earth. The only thing holding us back, are the "Anti-War" sentiments of certain individuals here at home. If such sentiments were around during WWII for instance, we would've been a long ago conquered Nation now speaking German and/or Japanese.

I agree with about 80% to 90% of what you said. The only issue however is that the Taliban did have something to do with 9/11, because they helped to secure and aide those who perpetrated it. In the United States, that is called being an Accessory to Murder. The Taliban also assassinated our Ally in Country, and they have at times become one in the same with Al-Qaeda. They can be crushed through a Multi-pronged approach, but the most important factor is that our MIL needs 100% unilateral support from all Americans, and we need to instruct our Politicians to butt out of MIL Matters.
