Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
I saw a hawk dart into a stand of trees. Moments later, six or eight crows came circling an squacking loudly. Then th hawk shot out fleeing and the attack began . He was running scared as they got within inches of him. I don't think they ever made contact though. After a few minutes all but one Crow left and it continued the harassment. I would of thought one on one the hawk would have fucked up the crow, but it more calmly continued aerial evasion. I have no point to this and know I'm inviting Dickhead comments, but I thought it was super cool to see.
ive seen sparrow-like birds chase a hawk before. i thought the same, that the "sparrows" were soon to be bird food. but after 2 minutes the hawk just flew away. maybe its like a dog chasing you, if you run away it will chase and attack you, but if you run at it it will likely run away from you.

It's the simple idea of a "Pack Mentality". You can witness the same sort of behavior with Water Buffalo fighting off entire Prides of African Lions, or Packs of Wolves engaging a Bear in defense of a Den.
Maybe it like when a Yorkshire terrier is yapping at a German shepard, He doesn't really care because he knows he could take care of business if he wanted to.

The basic idea of any predator is survival, and when the risk becomes far too high in their pursuit of a meal, they normally give up (Unless under extreme duress, such as during starvation). There's a video on the Internet of a Mother Cougar chasing off a Grizzly Bear, and it's based on the aforementioned concept.
I once saw 3 or 4 really small birds chase off a crow in a parking lot, over a discarded bag of McD's.
I think they might have been sparrows.
Even the animal kingdom has gangs.
I think I also saw a sparrow spray painting gang symbols on the wall, nearby, while all of this was going down.

But bird shoes are tiny.
It's hard to see them on a 20 foot telephone pole.
Luckily, it appears their turf wars don't include humans, since we are the ones leaving food and garbage all over the place for them.
It appears that the gangs are only interested in other aviary species.
Thank god. Those bitches could peck our eyes out!

Hummingbirds are evil.
They can get right up into your shit without you knowing it, and once they are there, they sound like bees. You start dodging them.
Nobody knows what those hummingbirds' agenda is.
They may want to pierce eardrums and eyeballs, for all we know.
Don't trust those evil hummingbirds.

Talk about it. I've seen gang fights in my backyard between Raccoons, and the Fox Family. I went out one time when there was a raucous going on, and I clapped my hands real hard once, and told them to knock it off. I then turned on the flash light, and there must've been about eight pairs of eyes staring back at me through the underbrush, just beyond the woodline. It's a real job keeping these critters in check, and it can be extremely precarious at times. Good thing we don't have a major bear or wolf population around here.

HURR HURR HURR HURR HURR. THAT JOKE WAS SO FUNNY. I SAID THAT HAWKS GET NO RESPECT, AND YOU SAID THAT "HAWKS" COULD BE A METAPHOR FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, BECAUSE YOU THINK THAT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY DOES NOT GET ANY RESPECT, EITHER. HURR HURR HURRRRRRRRRRR.

I heard that pigeons are moving in on their turf.
It's too bad, since everyone knows that hawks cook the best meth around.
Pigeons can't cook meth for shit. Those pigeons are basically selling sudafed tablets soaked in nail polish remover.
I think the crows are planning a move, however.
