He still lost the Olympics! I think it was a little early in his administration for the Nobel, but he was most 'marquis' of the other three finalists, so I'm not THAT surprised. Man of the year...definitely, yes...Nobel Prize...not so much.

I'm generally an Obama supporter, but this is laughable. The man has some good leads on getting stuff done, but he has accomplished nothing substantial in the way of peace.

Ugh.

Did the Nobel committee actually think he did the things he *said* he was going to do?

This is a guy who's running two wars and will shortly be increasing the troop size in Afghanistan. Peace. Yes. I guess.

At least now everyone will realize what a politicized joke the Nobel prize really is.

He got the prize for not being George Bush or one of his disciples. Seriously, Cher would have gotten it if she'd been voted in as President and said she'd consult the international community on stuff.

This isn't an affirmation of Obama, this is a repudiation of Bush and all he stood for.

Which tells you how far the Nobel Peace Prize committee has lost sight of being able to evaluate recipients anymore.

Give me a break. It will be interesting when he makes a wonderfully moving acceptance speech, then decides to send 50,000 more troops to Afghanistan to put down the locals. Maybe he'll praise the deliverance of peace and prosperity on the world, then order soldiers to paint "peace and prosperity" on all the missiles carried by drones.

Sure words can be powerful, but words without deeds are useless. If I promised you $1,000,000,000, would that make you rich? No, I actually have to give you the money before you're rich. Will me telling you that you're healthy make you healthy, even if you're obese? Nope, you have to take action to make yourself healthy.

That's the problem a lot of people have right now. There have been a lot of words, but not a lot of actions just yet.

I support the Democratic party and Obama but I don't really see any great "accomplishments" to support a Nobel Peace Prize?

The only reason I figure is that committee thought Bush was the worst ever for World peace so Obama was a huge step forward for peace.

I'll give the Dali Lama, Mother Teresa and Amnesty International credit for the prize. Gandhi was robbed of got a Nobel Peace prize.

I support Obama, but I agree that this is premature. If he closes GITMO, resolves the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan and/or begins normalizing relations with Iran and/or North Korea before his term as President, maybe. But the idea that FDR, Truman, Reagan or Clinton didn't receive this for what they did in office while Obama has for essentially giving a speech in Cairo makes no sense.

Hell, I will even through Bush Jr. in there for AIDS in Africa.

I voted for obama. I had high hopes and have been disappointed. I am gleeful Palin is not VP so no regrets.

My wife told me the Nobel prize news this morning and Ill be honest when she said "so Obama last night ... (granted poor syntax)" I thought something bad had happened to him. But when she said he won the Nobel I shook my head - for what?

Gitmo is still open. We are going to continue rendition to other countries. We are now killing suspected terrorists rather than capturing and worrying about holding and putting them on trial. We are staying the course in Afganistan.

WTF?

But gleeful--- I'd reserve that word for the weekly dumbass twitter feeds coming from her, and the cacaphony of bitch-slapping of the dumb twat that results.

The Peace Prize Committee, made up of Norwegians, appeared to have anticipated criticism of its choice. (The other Nobel prizes are awarded by a Swedish committee.) Committee Chairman Thorbjorn Jagland said the prize often has been used to encourage laureates rather than reward them for their achievements.

Norwegians, eh? Well THAT explains everything.

How is he failing? Is it possible to manage a shitty economy (which has rebounded and is sustaining it's growth), 2 wars, health care reform and restoration of the good American name in less than a year? What the fuck do you expect? Is there a light switch that he could've flipped differently, or is it rational to think that policy takes time to be effective?

It's too early to make that determination. Given what he inherited, I think you need to give the guy some time. If things are this bad in a year, then, yes, I would probably agree with you.

Okay to disagree with him. Okay to even not like him. But for them to root for every defeat (Olympics) and deride every accomplishment (Nobel) is wierd. It just seams as if the red meat for the extreme base is now controlling the party. How in the world the think they will capture moderates is beyond me.

Hmm. Better quantify or otherwise define "bad" before putting down money. Use a benchmark like "unemployment will be down 20% from the January 2009 number" or something like that. That would prevent subjectiveness and goalpost moving.

You are being awfully prickly these days, MrMephisto. You aren't being your charming self. Everything okay?

I won't bet because I don't know. I hope Obama is doing the right things. Just like I hoped Bush would do the right things after 9/11. I will determine in a year if they were good or not, which is my responsibility as a voter (for Congress, anyway).

Oh yeah, the media always rooted for Bush. Lol. He inherited a recession, then we get attacked, and all we heard for years after the bipartisanship ended (like 90 days) was how he lost all these "Clinton" jobs, and how the economy was so much more wonderful under Clinton. blah blah blah. The libs bashed Bush for YEARS, even with the 9/11 attacks. Now everyone wants to act like 9/11 never happened and that all of this occurred in a vacuum.

Obama has made a lot of promises, and he hasn't kept them - and is planning to break a few more. So yeah, since all the media does is sing his heavenly praises, other folks will have to carry the criticism bucket. Shit happens.

I yapped and yapped about The Right and about W for years.

Yet, after President Obama has assumed office, he has not followed through on much of anything he promised. Turns out that he's a big talker and not much of a doer.

Iraq? We're still there.
Afghanistan? Not only are we there, we're increasing our presence.
Gitmo? It is not yet shut down and Mr. Obama doesn't know what to do.
Rendition? Same as Bush.
Protection of privacy? Ditto.

Registerd voter - Bush inherited a 150 billion dollar surplus and with a Republican Congress and Senate (6 yrs) turned it into a 1 trillion dollar deficit.

Bush and Iraq - I guess you explain it cause I cannot without being 'mean to President Bush' and I know that would hurt your feelings almost as much as the 4,000 American soldiers that died and the tens of thousands of Americans maimed there (no why mention the 100,000's of dead brown people - who cares right).

Republicans are leaving McCain out to dry because he said 'of course we are proud when our President receives an award of this stature...' How old fashioned not to stoop to a level of un Americanism you may feel the Dems and Media stooped with Bush.

You sir are an idiot of the highest order.

Come on, even the staunchest progressive that has a brain HAS to acknowledge that there were a couple of extenuating circumstances in there, like the little matter of 9/11. It isn't like Bush had a peacetime period where all he did was spend money. First post that there should be no Dept. of Homeland Security, then post all of your own brilliant solutions, THEN complain about an inherited deficit.

But 9/11 was an inside job carried out by the loyal minions of the Lizard People. I don't think it counts.

dono - you probably dono remember, but Clinton had also done an interesting job of gutting the military, and reduced much of the spending for technology research. So sure, he got a "military dividend", along with the Republican Congress making major holds in expanding non-discretionary spending. On top of that you had massive amounts of spending on dot coms, and the Y2K work being done. Companies massively leveraged themselves and overbuilt their businesses, only to have the rug pulled out from under them when Y2K was over and a lot of IT folks were laid off all across the country. Left to its own devices, with the tax cuts they enacted, it would have been a very light recession and things would have turned around. Instead we than got to add 9/11 on top of it. Airlines took huge hits since no one was flying, no one was spending money for months - the entire economy took a hit. That was the last time they passed unemployment extensions. A lot of folks were out of work for two years. Hard to understand where that surplus went huh?

in hindsight, Iraq was bad. At the time, only a handful of folks were against it, and even Congress and the Democrats voted pretty overwhelmingly to support taking action there. It was hard for them to turn around and say that all the war drum beating they did under Clinton was suddenly not true when Bush used it as his justification. If they had found significant WMD there, this discussion would most likely be moot. When they finally committed to it, I remember telling folks that if they found nothing, we would have a lot of fallout from it, and need everything in concrete in the future if we ever tried something pre-emptively again.

Of course we are proud when our President recieves the Nobel - for the right reasons. There are a lot of people AROUND THE WORLD that are questioning the decision. There have been a number of people through the years that have been very deserving of the award - maybe they would have been better to award it to "The American People" for electing a black President. That would have made a lot more sense.

Don't forget how Bush was being bashed from the moment he took office, with every liberal in the land declaring that he cheated to get into office, and that Al the Goracle was truly the rightful President.

Yeah, there is this convenient "selective memory" going on. I think most of the BS today is just carryover from the 2000 election in all honesty. These folks still haven't gotten past the fact that the system did what it had to do to come to a conclusion. Today we see so many more blatant examples of political BS - like Massachusetts changing the rules to stop Romney from possibly appointing a Kerry successor, and then putting it back when Kennedy died so they could do exactly the thing they so passionately had to change in the first place.

I notice MSM barely touched in the issue that it was Kennedy who advocated for both changes, and they made very little light of the hypocrisy of the whole affair. Where were all the folks that felt the Supreme Court rigged an election? Didn't this behavior rise to the same level?

The one thing that gets to me is that people either forget the WMD evidence in IRAQ, and/or they never viewed it.

I remember Recon SATs tracking convoys of big rigs hauling B/C's into Syria, and it wasn't some made-up joke either, it was for real. Not to mention the fact that the Iraqi Regulars were all issued NBC Suits, and Antidote shots. Saddam even buried an entire Air Wing of his, because he feared a straight on fight with US, but he hoped for a resurrection on his behalf after we initially defeated them.

If that were the case, wouldn't Bush and Cheney have made that information public when they were being criticized about the lack of WMD in Iraq? Also, Rummy had toyed with the idea of invading Syria after the initial phase of the war in Iraq. Wouldn't that have been the justification they needed? Finally, Saddam Hussein didn't trust members of his own family. Why would he trust a foreign government he had a precarious relationship with?

Not to

Because Saddam's scientists had lied to him about the status of his WMD program so that they wouldn't be executed. That is well documented.

Like those sand-logged Mirage jets would have been any good to him.

Ugh, people defending bush - the worst president ever. Saying it was Clintons fault. What a joke.

Oh and Iraq was a lie. Joe Wilson spoke out against it and look what they did to him. The reason we went along is we trusted the President. He invaded Iraq for reasons that had nothing to do with National security. Dont revise history to hide that fact.

Its important that people understand how bad BUSH and the government was. 9/11 in not an excuse for the rampant non-defense spending. If you are a conservative you must get a grip and oppose all government waste not just the waste that the 'other party' promotes. The Republicans did a terrible job and wasted ungodly amounts of money - 9/11 is neither the reason nor is it an excuse.

Why be upset about our President getting a prize? who cares?

Okay so now go ahead and tell me how much I LOVE Obama and how mean I am to your beloved BUSH - it is just getting soooo old isnt it?

Note what I said:

"Where we are now is a result of both parties and their lack of fiscal discipline - period."

I have pointed out in the past that the Republicans spent way too much money under Bush, and I spoke out about it then by writing to my representatives. But it is both sides that got us here, not just the democrats. The problem you face now is, they are in power and content to set records on outspending everyone else.
