The Consistency of Poop

One of things that I've noticed as I've gotten older is that the consistency and texture of my poop has changed dramatically.
When I was younger, I recall often straining for Lincoln Log-shaped brown sharks that were either semi-soft or hard. Sometimes the brown sharks would appear as pellets if, say, I consumed high quantities of meats or cheeses.
Now, and for the last 4 years, I've noticed that my poop has the consistency of mud. It looks like mud or even a darker version of chunky-style JIF peanut butter. Is this normal?
FWIW, I have not had a large log-shaped poop in the 4 years since it turned to mud and, I must add, I do eat a well-balanced diet and drink plenty of water. I also poop about 2-3 times a day, depending on my fiber intake.
Any suggestions, or is this often the case with your bowel movements?
Thanks.
