What is "rich"
Posted by: Johnathan ()

What is "rich" to you? If somebody is "rich", what does that mean to you? Is it a precise dollar amount? Is it a lifestyle? Is somebody with $50,000 cash "rich"? $300,000? One Million? Where is that threshold for you?

Ask WashingTone-Locian. He is the wealthiest person on this board and will remind you of that fact on a daily basis. He is the final authority on money and power.

Rich is being able to survive anything the economy throws at you.

If you make $200,000 a year, you might FEEL rich, but once you lose your job, how rich are you?

If you make a decent salary, say, $85, 90, 100k, but you are mortgaged to the hilt or over extended, you are not rich.

There are people making 50k a year who are rich, because they have been prudent, and working for years to save their money.

There are people who make $300,000 or a million a year who would be homeless and destiitute if they lost their jobs.

To be truly "rich" you need to have a few billion dollars. Otherwise, you might believe you are rich, but you are still vulnerable to any political fuck up that might screw up the economy.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
The function of conservatives is not to meet every liberal program or scheme with a denunciation or a destructive counterscheme, but rather to weigh its advantages and defects, supporting the first and challenging the second. A declaration of ideological warfare against liberalism is by its nature profoundly unconservative. It meets perceived radicalism with a counterradicalism of its own.

rich is when you can go somewhere and do what you like because if they dont like it, you can always buy the place... or you already own it. see: Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins.

I define "rich" as having everything you want.

I can define what not being "rich" is. It's being Ken Doll and obsessing about people who you fear are more successful than you. So much so that you make random posts at 1:29 am and then respond to your own post at 1:34 am. So much so that you dig up information on the wrong person and try to threaten others on a forum.

Gordon Gecko might be on point:

Wake up, will ya pal? If you're not inside, you're outside, OK? And I'm not talking a $400,000 a year working Wall Street stiff flying first class and being comfortable, I'm talking about liquid. Rich enough to have your own jet. Rich enough not to waste time. Fifty, a hundred million dollars buddy. A player, or nothing. Now you had what it took to get into my office; The real question is whether you got what it takes to stay.

Personally, I think you have to make in the tens of millions of dollars to be really "rich." A million isn't what it once was.

I don't necessarily agree with this because it is human nature to always want more. By your definition, people like Donald Trump, who keeps acquiring things including wives, aren't rich.

Sure they are, as long as they are fulfilled. Collecting money, power, women - that is what floats Trumps boat. To each his own.

Exactly. I wouldn't want his life, and I'm sure he wouldn't want mine.

I think there are people who do what they love and happen to become rich along the way. I think Sam Walton, Warren Buffet and Steve Jobs fall in that category. Then there are people who acquire things obsessively in some sort of psychologically depraved bid at self-affirmation. I think Donald Trump, Jack Welch and guys like Bernie Madoff, Jeff Skilling and "Sir" Allen Stanford fall in this category.

Even for this area and even for a rich person, it seems overpriced.

Yowza! Now you're talkin'!

Hey. If I put $4.5 million down, my monthly payment is only $98K a month. What a steal!

To me being rich is when no person can make you homeless. IOW if you have enough money invested in the right spots and you were fired (if you work for someone) or your product or service loses buyers (if self-employed), you can still live on indefinitely. Or if not indefinitely then for as long as you comfortably want before finding other income.

It isn't a dollar amount. Many times lifestyles and standards of living increase commensurate with rising income, and someone with a high income could be bankrupt in one month after losing a job because of the expensive lifestyle.

edit to add: and FINALLY people are starting to "get it":

Thank goodness people are starting to get it. I don't consider myself "rich", but I've always subscribed to the "no debt" theory of financial responsibility. I used to be sorta pissed that I couldn't afford a 3,000 sq.ft. house like a few friends of mine, I didn't have a home theater, plasma TVs in every room, a Lexus, etc. etc. I know many people who have those. And guess what...a few of them are fucking screwed right now.

Yeah, what is the point of driving a Lexus when there are other options that are by far cheaper and serve the main purpose - to get you from point A to point B. I remember back in college that there was always that group of guys in my dorm that thought they were hot shit because they were cruising around campus in a Lexus or a similar high-end vehicle. What most of them refused to advertise was that the cars were most likely leased and that they were probably already in debt thousands and thousands of dollars with credit cards. Some things never change, and some of those same people probably lost their asses by buying too much house.

Super rich- somebody else handles your finances
Rich- you don't bother balancing your Checkbook 'cause you know there's enough to cover that check you just wrote.
Working Rich- you have to time you bill payments to avoid NSF's, but you still pretty much buy what you want.
Doing Alright- the "quick Cash" buttons on the ATM are too low at $200 max.
Poor- you seek out ATM's that shell out in ten dollar increments.
Poverty- when you answer "no" to the ATM asking if you want to check your balance first, it says "really? Are ya SURE you don't want to check first?"
