How many spaces after a period?

It's 2, right? I am seeing more and more writing with only one space..

And, an ending quotation shoud go on the outside of the "period."

Im talking about real writing, not the shit going on here.

It's 2, but it's becoming more acceptable to use 1, especially when you're writing proposals that have page limitations.

I do one space only but I agree on the quotation thing. I write and edit lots of lengthy reports and I have only seen the two space thing a few times. I think it is a generation thing - I believe the authors were older. I find it bizarre and I do not believe most print mediums do that. Why do you need an extra space?

From the MLA Handbook:

"Publications in the United States today usually have the same spacing after a punctuation mark as between words on the same line. Since word processors make available the same fonts used by typesetters for printed works, many writers, influenced by the look of typeset publications, now leave only one space after a concluding punctuation mark. In addition, most publishers' guidelines for preparing electronic manuscripts ask authors to type only the spaces that are to appear in print.

Because it is increasingly common for papers and manuscripts to be prepared with a single space after all punctuation marks, this spacing is shown in the examples in the MLA Handbook and the MLA Style Manual. As a practical matter, however, there is nothing wrong with using two spaces after concluding punctuation marks unless an instructor or editor requests that you do otherwise."

It use to be two, but now most style books, including the AP Style book, say one.

So the answer is one.

FYI - Associated Press (AP) Style Guide is the most widely accepted style guide. The guide is used by most major publications and Universities.

Sounds fun. How much longer before they find your brains on the wall from boredom and repetetiveness.

It was two but now it is one. That's because the spacing on old typewriters was so inexact that you had to use two spaces to reliably indicate a sentence break. But with computers, that is no longer necessary.

Well there are three dots in an ellipsis - you only show two. Starting a sentence with 'And' is pretty weak.

You are correct about 2 spaces and punctuation within the quotation mark.

LOL, In college I would change the line spacing about 20% in the word processor so my term papers would look a little longer. No professor ever noticed.

I did that, too. But back then, I was one of only a few who even had a computer and printer in my dorm room.

In High School, I was the only one to hand in "typed" essays and reports while everyone else hand wrote their reports. I always got an A or a B, even if I banged it out in an hour the morning it was due.

Creative use of font size, kerning, and word and line spacing was always used to make whatever I could come up with appear to be the assigned number of pages. If I was really desperate, I'd adjust the margins, too.

The function of conservatives is not to meet every liberal program or scheme with a denunciation or a destructive counterscheme, but rather to weigh its advantages and defects, supporting the first and challenging the second. A declaration of ideological warfare against liberalism is by its nature profoundly unconservative. It meets perceived radicalism with a counterradicalism of its own.
