Is it safe to leave a crock pot plugged in and cooking all day while you are at work?
Posted by: s0 Hungry ()

I have been trying crock pot cooking but I am scared to leave the crock pot plugged in and running while I'm working. I am afraid my townhouse might catch fire and kill my dog. I come home at lunchtime every day to let my dog out and check on things.
Is my fear of my 17 dollar Walmart crock pot bursting into flames realistic or just stupid?

Turn it on while checking your dog.

It's fine, leave it on when you go to work . It's designed for that. Don't put water in it, just let the meat slowly stew in its own juices. I throw some thick sliced onion in bottom and meat on top, whatever sauce or herbs you want on top. Other veggies like carrot, celery around the sides, then when come home you have awesomeness.

I don't think your fear with a $17 Walmart crock pot is stupid. The quality of the wiring is probably very poor, which means there is a higher possibility that the wiring could overheat and start a fire. A good quality one is a different story, and the risk with it would be much lower.

You may have a concern.

About 5 years ago, because of some idiots that made themselves sick and sued, crockpots now reach a higher temperature than the older models that actually work properly.

Today's crockpots are more accurately boilers and not slow-cookers.
Therefore they are much more likely to boil away liquids, dry out and start a fire.

Personally, I would not leave a new crockpot unattended all day.

Look around yard sales online etc. for an older one that operates at a safer temperature.

Make sure it has a UL listing and it is plugged into a GFCI outlet tightly. Loose electrical outlets need to be replaced.

Just run it overnight then put it in the fridge when you get up for work. At least you'd be home if a fire starts, and you can reheat the food for dinner.

I am on the road about 100 nights a year for my job and I use a crockpot in mid priced (2-3 star) motels from here to Oklahoma all the time. I have found it the best and cheapest way to eat on the road. I use the disposable liners and put meats, veggies of all sorts in that thing and never had a problem. Of course if my motel burns down I am out next to nothing but hey don't worry about it!

Crock pot is about the most dangerous appliance that exists. Anyone who uses one is a fucking selfish moron with no regard for safety or the safety of their neighbors. Shove your crock pot up your ass, you careless dickhead.

It's safer when you use it in conjunction with a vintage space heater. Runthem close to curtains...all day long.

I buy London broil when it's on sale the cut it into 1 pound sections and freeze it. I can put one or two of the sections of the frozen meat with potatos, onions, baby carrots, pepper strips and Montreal steak seasoning in the pot before work. When I get home 10 hours later the shit is cooked to perfection and the meat is tender as a motherfucker. My house has not caught on fire yet and my slow cooker is a cheap ass Kmart one.

If your wiring is in good condition and your modern crock pot plugs in securely you have a .004% chance of having a crock pot related fire. I will take those odds in exchange for my heavenly pot roast every Thursday night.

You should switch to a battery operated one.

Who wants to be tethered by the ass to an outlet?

I hope you skinned it first. Chicken skin is all wet and rubbery when cooked in the crock pot.
