40,000 More Troops to Afghanistan?
Posted by: WTF? ()

I thought George Bush said we won this war?

Should we stay or leave? Seems we just keep piling more and more troops into this war. Nobody country has ever won because of the terrain. The Russians got their butts kicked after 10 years.

Now we are asked to send up to 40,000 more troops? Every time we send more troops the resistance grows because Arabs think we are invading to take over the Middle East.

4,300 US citizens now killed! Double the amount killed in the World Trade Center.

McChrystal Request to Reach Pentagon by End of the Week

Senior administration officials have said that McChrystal's report is only one "input" the White House is considering in a more wide-ranging review of strategy, including a possible shift from counterinsurgency in Afghanistan toward stepped-up attacks against al-Qaeda in Pakistan and elsewhere.

"There are many other considerations that we have to take into account," Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said on PBS's "NewsHour With Jim Lehrer" on Monday. "There are other assessments from very expert military analysts who have worked in counterinsurgencies that are the exact opposite" of McChrystal's.

Asked about the experts Clinton was referring to, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said she was making the "broader point" that an ongoing assessment will "involve a range of views -- military, civilian and outsiders" and a "Red Team" to probe for weaknesses in official views.
...

So Hillary cites "unnamed experts" that the State Department then needs to clarify for her.

In all, 2,605 died at the WTC site. If you double that number, it equals 5504, not 4300.

Facts, they do matter....

That's the kind of change I voted for.

Perhaps Bush did have it won and gave the victory ready to Obama on silver platter, whom in his infinite wisdom decided to change the strategy.

He said we won in Iraq.

He said Afghanistan is a goat fuck and he hoped some other President would fix it (or, at least his actions said that).

Actually...in the case given..the exact numbers dont matter..one death of a US soldier in an unjust or mismanaged war is too many.

Originally Afghanistan was a good idea, and they accomplished the goal of knocking the Taliban out of power. Much as I would like to see them succeed there, I don't think it is possible given the inadequacy of Pakistan in dealing with their border regions, and Iran most likely offering support as they can to help destabilize the area.

At this point I think we need to pull out and let them kill each other if that is what they want to do. Support the warlord(s) who follows our interests in rooting out Taliban and Al Qaeda where they can, but otherwise get out and let the dust settle there. Tell the Taliban if they allow a resurgence in terrorism training to come at the US or our allies, the next time we come back it will be with the promise that we will be looking to reduce our heavy weapons arsenals in the interests of world peace.

Did you actually think about this before you posted?

We've been in Afghanistan for 8 years now. Things haven't changed because of anything Obama has done in the last 8 months.

If we haven't won it already, Obama taking office isn't going to change a thing, and when he does actually change strategy, which he really hasn't done yet, the prospects are going to be the same.

Bush fucked it up by planting ground forces there. It wasn't even his fault, that was what Cheney and Rumsfeld wanted, before they were allowed to open up a larger war in Iraq to please their friends at Carlyle Group and Winston Partners.

The original strategy of sending in special forces and CIA operatives to link up with the Northern Alliance was highly successful.

Allowing Bin Laden and the Taliban to escape in Tora Bora, that was a clusterfuck only a defense contractor could love. Building bases and attempting to direct the new government according to western ideas of democracy, that was just plain stupid.

Chasing terrorist organizers and supporters has worked well, planting our flag in foreign countries has only gotten our troops killed for very little gain to our security or interests.

The function of conservatives is not to meet every liberal program or scheme with a denunciation or a destructive counterscheme, but rather to weigh its advantages and defects, supporting the first and challenging the second. A declaration of ideological warfare against liberalism is by its nature profoundly unconservative. It meets perceived radicalism with a counterradicalism of its own.

i personally think we should pull out. But, if we are going to stay, we should go with the surge strategy and overwhelm them with force.
