In the Shopping Cart of a Food Stamp Household: Lots of Soda

By ANAHAD O’CONNOR
JAN. 13, 2017

What do households on food stamps buy at the grocery store?

The answer was largely a mystery until now. The United States Department of Agriculture, which oversees the $74 billion food stamp program called SNAP, has published a detailed report that provides a glimpse into the shopping cart of the typical household that receives food stamps.

The findings show that the No. 1 purchases by SNAP households are soft drinks, which accounted for about 10 percent of the dollars they spent on food. “In this sense, SNAP is a multibillion-dollar taxpayer subsidy of the soda industry,” said Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University. “It’s pretty shocking.”

You can only get store brand soda with EBT. I use Aldie, that store is made for welfare.

How can food stamps discriminate between store brands and independent brands like Coke? Is that even legal?

Trader Joe's and Aldi's have a lot good food with their store brands, but I don't think they would be better for welfare. Whole Foods has the most store brands and more variety, but all stores have store brands.

Social workers should audit all SNAP purchases based on the UPC. Any loser buying too much junk food should be required to work and be kicked off the program.

They don't. It's bullshit.

WTF do you mean by that? Trader Joe's and Aldi have great quality food. It's all private label brands, but so is Whole Foods. Are you considering Whole Foods in the same category? Food doesn't need to have a "Del Monte" or "Nabisco" label to be good quality.

SNAP covers over half my food budget, it is a great program. I work for cash so I get free food and healthcare. Some of the food banks around the area are nice too. There is just no good reason to use my own money on that stuff when it's available for free.
