GOP introduces plan to massively cut Social Security

On Thursday, Rep. Sam Johnson, a Republican from Texas and chair of the Ways and Means Committee, introduced legislation to significantly cut Social Security.

The bill introduced by Johnson, who is also the chair of the Social Security subcommittee, slashes benefits, adds means testing, and would raise the retirement age from 67 to 69.

For most workers, the bill would cut Social Security benefits substantially. As Michael Linden, associate director for tax and budget policy at Center for American Progress, pointed out on Twitter, a letter from Social Security’s Office of the Actuary calculated workers making around $50,000 would see checks shrink by between 11% and 35%.

When the time comes cut their medicare and only have it for people born after a certain year. That's what they do, they only allow the benefits to remain for people born prior to a certain year.

Younger folks need to pay attention - the plan proposes cutting benefits and raising the age (so many will suffer and-or die before being eligible) -

Under Johnson’s plan, a middle-class 65-year-old claiming benefits in 2030 - one with average annual earnings of about $49,000 over 30 years of covered employment - would experience a 17 percent benefit cut relative to what the program currently promises them, according to the Social Security Administration’s chief actuary. A 65-year-old with the same earnings history claiming benefits in 2050 would experience a 28 percent benefit cut compared to current law.

Social Security serves no purpose. Old people need to pay their own way like everybody else. This is America! Not a socialist state.

obviously if USA workers are forced to put in x and loose y of x, then y is tax not withholding for security

What they could do is to pay everybody off the full value of their paid-in benefits in one lump sum, with the cutoff time imposed for younger people so they can start their own stock/bond investments and create their own future income for themselves. The seniors can take their lump sum payment and move to another cheaper country with a good system in place and buy in to that one and live there happily ever after. The younger generation will have to fend for themselves if that is what they wish for.

And by the way, there is no raise in Cola this year, because they now raise the medicare monthly cost to be equal to the annual "raise" that is "given out" in essence only--there is no cash increase. The gubermint givith with the right hand as it taketh away with the left...

Im sure that once the ultr-wealthy have just a little bit more money the benefits will start rolling in to the rest of us. Cut taxes for the 1% and corporations first then watch the $$$ roll in to the middle class. This is a sure-fire way to win!
