John Glenn, First American To Orbit The Earth, Dies At 95

December 8, 20163:33 PM ET

The first American to orbit the Earth has died. John Glenn was the last surviving member of the original Mercury astronauts. He would later have a long political career as a U.S. senator, but that didn't stop his pioneering ways.

Glenn made history a second time in 1998, when he flew aboard the shuttle Discovery to become the oldest person to fly in space.

Glenn was 95 when he died; he had been hospitalized in an Ohio State University medical center in Columbus since last week.

Glenn had been battling health issues since a stroke a few years ago. His death Thursday was confirmed by Hank Wilson, communications director of the John Glenn College of Public Affairs at the Ohio State University.

President Obama said that Glenn's trailblazing showed "with courage and a spirit of discovery there's no limit to the heights we can reach together." The president said, "John always had the right stuff, inspiring generations of scientists, engineers and astronauts ... On behalf of a grateful nation, Godspeed, John Glenn."

Yeah, those early guys were rock stars. Bigger than rock stars. People don't understand how far we've fallen as far as the people kids look up to these days.

You got that right. Actually John F. Kennedy was a hero back then because he started the whole space race.

Kennedy had the balls to be a leader in space and make it a national priority. No president since has been willing to state how important space exploration is for the nation, as well as mankind.

When school teachers talk of John Glenn and the noble exploits of other great men, will wetback, chink and raghead children even care or understand their meaning?

The Great Society was Lyndon Johnson and Vietnam was both Johnson and Tricky Dick. You kids really are stupid.
Kennedy stood up against the USSR while our President elect wants to kiss their ass.

Go to the Air and Space Museum and see how small and cramped that capsule was that he was in. He was an amazing man.

A man with a smile and a good sense of humor, a guy who you knew could figure how to get out of a jam with a slide rule or a machine gun on a Jet Fighter . All American John Glenn was , and in 1998 Rode the "Lit Candle" again into space..even though he was 78. A totally devoted husband and father.

Ill never forget the excitement of being in school or sometimes earlier at home, with the 10 9 8 ..Ignition Blast Off. We would be packed double in the classrooms TV on the portable stand all watching in school to se them Blast Off.. they Were All The Greatest..

DAJAX His Gun Control Support..as a US Senator?? Ah Hell Forget it, He still was a True Hero.. Everyone is entitled to one mistake..He was John Glenn..All American. He will be buried in Arlington cemetery my guess near Gen. Jimmy Doolittle USAF who commanded the Bombs over Tokyo mission on Apr 18th 1942 and Gave the USA a Huge much needed boost in confidence at the beginning of WW2.. in section 7A.

Everyone knows the Earth is flatter than a pancake. The sky is actually just a dome covering with holes to allow light to enter.

Interest? The Return On Investment is between $7 and $14 for every dollar put into the space program.

I remember the Kennedy Years were one of feeling good, I remember growing up in MA. during that era, JFK was a hero to us, the family was loved by us. Nobody, no First Lady, can come close to the elegance of Jackie, she was also beloved by us. I like Trump but Melania could not hold a candle to Jackie.

Like what happened to the 3 Mercury astronauts that were burned to death in their capsule circa about 1966. Taking one hell of a risk.

Apollo 1 astronauts. They died of CM poisoning prior to being incinerated in capsule

The former Nazi, Werner von Braun, is without a doubt, the greatest Systems Engineer in the history of mankind. Also, he would have liked to have been in the capsule himself. Kennedy provided the backing and motivated the nation, but Werner von Braun (a former Nazi SS Major) got us to the moon.
