2,000,000 strong patriots rally against communism. This is beautiful. We need more show of support for The Republic like this.

Keep in mind, this is much larger than MLKs gathering a few decades ago. This was really special.

2,000,000 HA You might want to re-read your article. The source is dubious at best.

The page header says "up to 2,000,000 million people"

the title of the article says "A million people march..."

then the caption of the picture says, " Tens of thousands..."

so which is it, 2mil, 1mil , or 30 thousand..

From a more reliable source- CNN-
" An official crowd estimate was not available, but reporters at the scene described the massive crowd as reaching the tens of thousands."

And guess what, Fox News surprisingly gave the same estimate.

To quote a Republican Congressman- "YOU LIE"

Please STFU and go away.

LOL. There weren't 2 million people down there.

There weren't even 2 million at Obama's inauguration. Compare those inauguration pictures to yesterday's event.

Some neocon blog posted this 2M!! nonsense yesterday, and included a pic that showed large mobs of people that were supposedly there. Except they forgot that the American Indian Museum has been built within the past ten years- somehow it was missing in their photos.

Get over it and stop lying. My guess is less than 50K- because no one who has a brain in their head would involve themselves with this uniformed, misinformed, white trash "cause".

Time-lapse photography of 9/12 crowd. I dunno if that's 2 million. Put any number you want on 'em, but it's obviously way more than 50k.

Btw, for comparison, here is a live shot of the fixed angle the time-lapse was taken from: http://www.trafficland.com/city/WAS/?rsid=weatherbug No missing buildings. No trickery.

A cousin of mine and their family came up from out of state to attend the event. I didn't even know they were up here until Saturday evening when they called us to go to dinner with them. They had attended some events in the past (not related to this - concerts and such) in NY where there were over 300,000 people. They said the numbers they saw here totally eclipsed that - they believed it was close to a million just from what they had been able to observe. They were amazed at how many people showed up, and they said folks just kept coming.

The papers/news can deny all they want. I keep seeing estimates of "tens of thousands". Yeah...That's like saying there were more than 2 people. If I were a politician, I'd be concerned. My estimate is that it was an f-ing lot of people...and they were pissed about something.

Well, to compare, what is the population of DC?

591,833 in July of 2008.

So, no, I have to call bullshit.

The crowd probably, at best, matched the crowds on the 4th of July.

They certainly don't appear to match the 1 million on January 20th 2009:

HA what?

are you calling me out, or are you agreeing that the crowd for this tea bagger protest is overstated?

If you're a true conservative, you would want to distance yourself from the fringe.

These are the folks that don't have any specific personal political view, they are just worked up by the cable channel and AM radio stations they listen to.

You're trying to have a more nuanced and educated political opinion. Don't throw yourself in with that lot.

it wasnt two million but it sure was a bunch of people. either way, it's a rare occurrence for that many people to protest in DC.

the nation really seems to be torn on this issue.

Thurston. As I said, I just found out the other day that my cousin and their family came up for this. My cousin and her husband are both college educated and highly intelligent. She runs her own business and has been successful for years, and has a masters in chemistry. Her business deals with her expertise. She is not on the radical fringe by any stretch of the imagination. Matter of fact her and her husband are quite liberal normally - they put it as "Unfortunately we voted for Obama because we thought he was going to be more open about how he would run things." Now they feel he has just proven that he cannot be trusted, and his backing of these fiscal policies is too much for them to stand for. I was quite surprised they came up for this event - I would not have thought in a million years they would be at a protest... neither did they.

They said the lines for using bathrooms in the buildings in the area were huge. They didn't have anywhere near enough toilets. That was one of the things they said was a problem.

Unofficial estimates are 1.2M now.

I remember when the Republicans were claiming that Palin drew 25,000 at some park in Fairfax and it ended up being closer to 3,000. These people just pull these fucking numbers out of the air.

What I saw from TV were crowds at the base of the Capitol. If it were 1 million people, the whole fucking Mall would be packed. I didn't see anything like that.

WTL - I was at that particular rally. There were roughly 23000 people there - I spoke with some officials in Fairfax City after the fact and they confirmed it. So please, STFU when you don't have a clue what you are talking about.

It doesn't matter what the number was - I know it was less than Obama's inaugaration which was estimated around million people nonetheless it was quite large.

What staggers me more than anything is that people are so stupid. The current health system in the US sucks - these people are in effect protesting FOR insurance companies and big pharma to keep on robbing us blind. They are protesting for profit health care which in my mind just doesn't make sense - to profit off of someone being sick is just that - sick. To protest for these causes staggers my mind and in all honesty I think you're beyond stupid to believe such a thing.

The Obama proposal aren't even that good, they are a band-aid fix on a gaping wound. /rant off

No - they are protesting that sure, we need change. But not with the deficit spending we are incurring at the moment. Most of the folks out there believe they should cut back on spending, that lawmakers should listen to the majority of Americans that say enough on spending already, etc. - that is their beef. If you don't understand that, then why are you even commenting?

I guess you will have to chalk this up to people being willing to live with the devil they know, then the one that promises them that everything can be made better if "you just let the government run it".

So they are protesting deficit spending?? That's rich, George W - had one of the highest deficit spending policies on record - the Republican party never uttered a word or howled in protest.

I'm actually all for reductions in deficits and I'm also for socialised healthcare.

There are a few ways to go about this - reverse the tax cuts that W. enacted, on top of that increase the tax rate for households earning >250k a few percentage points, negotiate w big pharma (every other western nation does, why don't we??), get out of Iraq, get out of Afghanistan - bam - savings and then some realised.

Then we have paid for universal healthcare, as well as a healthy working towards reversing the incredible deficit started by your favourite president George W.

Wow FF... good to know you can quit your day job and write fiction. You are so good at it!

Now if only you would have included the Fairfax City Police officials monitoring the event, or the City Council with official numbers after the event you might have been more spot on, but then you were writing fiction weren't you?

The rally was actually pretty good. But I was voting for McCain, not Palin. Although she did look a lot better up there on the stage than the rest of them.

I was asking Alias you big jerk. You come on here and act like you know everything, but you're just rude, and you've probably never even seen it.

Right.

And yet we had this same question asked back a few weeks ago.

Is there a point to your question other than genuinely wanting to know? Or did you have a follow on questions presuming he said "No"?

A funny contrast was the Black Family Reunion being held at the same time on the other end of the mall. Those people weren't happy about the protest.

The Black Family reunion at 14th St and Contstitution. The protest started at Freedom Plaza (13th St. and Pennsylvania), and marched down Pennsylvania Ave. At the end, the idiot crowd barely made it passed Third St. NW, allowing the far fewer than 75,000 people estimate given.

I bet the two groups barely saw each other.

According to a friend of mine who came from Boston to participate, the license for the event was for 10,000 people. It started at 11:00 AM, but by 8:00 AM there were over 11,000 people gathering. The organizers and National Park Service had to completely reconfigure the event at that point. According to the NPS, there were over 1 million people.

I have not heard the 2 million people figure from anyone.

Interesting that when the liberals have a "million <> march" and only get a tiny fraction (according to NPS figures) the Washington Post reports that there were millions over people, but when it's a conservative rally and NPS says "over a million" the Post says "tens of thousands".

Latest word from NPS is that they refuse to provide numbers any more because they get in trouble with politicians, who invariably dislike the facts.

By they way, cell phones did not work - system overloaded.

Not true. Both sides bitch and moan that the media reports inaccurate numbers or couch their estimates with lower denominations (thousands instead of tens of thousands, etc).

Registered voter, Could you respond to Britdrnva's post?

If all these people are really protesting lies from the president and Govt spending, Then where the hell were all these proud republican Americans from 2000 to 2008? Is it that hard to put country over party?

$480B vs $1.8T?

And yeah, A lot of people protested the spending. I have commented a number of times about the "Republicans spending money like drunken sailors" while Bush was in office. So did a lot of other people.

But just because Bush and the Republicans did it (with some help from the Democrats), doesn't mean we should triple-down on the deficit spending because Dick Cheney said "deficits don't matter". You should look squarely at yourselves and say "well gee, the democrats were complaining about the large deficits - now they are spending like drunken sailors!" Where is the outrage now? Lost in partisan excuses.

...if it takes $1.8t to fix the problems left behind and ignored over the last 8 years, then by all means, spend away.

Nice partisan hack answer.

It was bad that Bush spent the money, but it is ok for "us" to spend it. BS.

As many as 2 million protesters attend 9/12 Washington, D.C. Tea Party Rally
http://www.examiner.com/x-20909-Columbia-Independent-Examiner~y2009m9d13-As-many-as-2-million-protestors-attend-912-Washington-DC-Tea-Party-Rally

Quote

...
Rally-goers said they are not strictly anti-Obama, or anti-Democrat, but instead are fed up with big government, corruption, high taxes, and runaway spending. They said they have had enough of politicians who don't listen to their concerns and are more afraid of special interests than they are of the voters. Many in the crowd said they were Democrats or independents. The protestors were clearly from across the political spectrum, young and old, black and white, male and female. It will be hard to dismiss them as being only angry Republicans.
...

Note: The person that wrote this article could not verify any numbers. They did point out though that based on the overall photographs it was clearly more than 60-70000 as some want to portray - and that the area in front of the Capitol was full, as well as the Mall. They did note that possibly another group was at the far end, but no idea how many or what impact that would have had.

So it was about 2,300 people in support of Glenn Beck and roughly 58,000 there for the black family reunion. Excellent. Thanks for clearing that up.

I agree, It does not matter who is doing the spending, Throwing good money after bad is not a good policy. But, is this all the presidents fault? Is his presidency the cause of all that is evil in Government? NO, of course not. Can the President do better? Yes, a lot better. He can do better in handling the congress and his party. And being more open in the way it does business. This administration is still leaps and bounds more open than W's.

Cant you can see the outside influences w/ ulterior motives, on these 'freely associated' teabaggers.

All these folks are pissed as hell, about the president, Calling him a socialist, nazi,Fascist. They all want the president out of office, but I dont think many of them know why.

He has been in office for 8 months. . Do these teabaggers know we have a congress?

However, of that 1.8T, that you are referencing, Although Obama did ultimately sign the spending bill I believe 800b to 1T was already in the works before President Obama took office, . You cant include the TARP or other bank bailouts in that figure since the FED is getting repaid with interest. Are you including the Iraq war in the figure of Bush's 480B? I think we can consider that a spending bill.

Again - you are saying they want Obama out of office. That is not why they were there. They wanted their representatives to listen to them and stop the spending - let the dust settle before making major changes to medical insurance and potentially opening up larger problems. Sure, there were some folks there with signs calling Obama names - but you do understand why they are calling themselves tea baggers right? It isn't because they want to pelt Obama with tea bags.

Hey FF - when you actually have something intelligent to say...

Won't we all be surprised.

But keep up with your lameness. Vince had promised to stalk my posts - now it appears you have taken up his mantle. Nothing like some man-love to brighten my day. And I love how you refer to me a reggie and reginald - I get shivers up my leg every time you post.
