Where the the anti-war protests go?
Posted by: war vet ()

Remember when people used to protest the Iraq war? Even BEFORE the war started, there was a massive protest. There have not been any protests in awhile. What happened? WHy don't people protest the war anymore? I can't find an anti-war demonstration anywhere, even in D.C.

ur thoughts?

Because they're stupid enough to think that Obama will actually do anything about the wars.

Because once the war actually started, a lot of people who went to them became disillusioned and the protests got smaller and smaller.

The protest movement was never large enough nor effective enough to hold the attention of the typical American. Now that we have right wing paranoia making the headlines dont expect to hear to much until the fall. When the right wing "steals" the issue of the war from the left it will start to get news covergae again.

The anti-war "protests" were comprised of a nutjob named Cindy Sheehan and
her followers who are perceived as being mentally unstable. Most people realize
by now that she (Cindy) is crazy.

it's simple, the war is a footnote in the media. without media coverage, nobody will ever hear you. besides, protesting has stopped how many wars?

Im sure someone will disagree (big surprise)...one, Vietnam. Plus protesting has had a wider impact then just stopping wars..just look at your recent town hall meetings.

No most of the major protests are/were from ANSWER, a group that is in support of North Korea's Stalinist policies. It's unfortunate they were the only game in town that could get the number of protesters they did. I volunteered with them for a bit and it was weird. They were not interested in peaceful messages, but more focused on American Imerialism (BLAME AMERICA!), which I think turned a lot of people who would otherwise be interested off. They had/have an agenda and it has nothing to do with ending the war.

Because all of the "Anti-War" protestors were rightfully shot and dumped into the Anacostia River where they belong. Bunch of filthy punk-bred Hippies, always clogging traffic and disrespecting the MIL.

Yeah, but the Town Hall "protestors" aren't putting down the Men and Women serving our Nation. They are lashing back at the massive number of stupid Politicians currently in power on the Hill.

The "Right Wing" is basically composed of those individuals who support our Military Efforts, and our MIL. In other words, most of the individuals actually doing anything about our current War are in fact "Right Wingers".

There you go again. Protests against the Vietnam War had very little impact
on public opinion if any. During the 1968 Tet Offensive, the media began
showing live combat for the first time. That is what started changing public
opinion against the war. Are you planning on building a monument to
draft dodgers on Constitution Avenue?

Without the protests we'd still be in Vietnam fighting an "insurgency". As far as Im concerned the only reason we are still in Iraq and Afghanistan is the lack of an effective protest movement. In the fall when the republican machine turns against Obama's War maybe they can get those teabaggers out to protest...after all the war is a major deficit buster. If they do..maybe I'll join them.

If the protesters were effective, it sure as Hell didnt show up in the Nixon-McGovern election did it? As I recall, Nixon carried everywhere but Mass. and
DC. in the largest landslide in Presidential election history. Back in those days, I was out protesting and organizing. I remember following the poll
numbers and they didnt start changing until after Tet. So you see Vince,
some of us were actually coherent after all. I realize your only contribution
was voting for George so I can understand your lack of knowledge of the era.

Dear Jerry aka RV (you are fooling no one..you couldnt keep your mouth shut for a day if your life depended on it),

You intentionally associate two unrelated events in the hopes of confusing...aka, a lie! The war movement and its influence has nothing to do with the success or failure of the McCarthy Campaign. They are two unassociated events. Making your ridiculous claim would be like me trying say that the healthcare townhall protests hasnt influenced that debate.
