The Unwitting Birthplace of the 'Death Panel' Myth

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- This city often shows up on "best places to live" lists, but residents say it is also a good place to die -- which is how it landed in the center of a controversy that almost derailed health-care reform this summer.

The town's biggest hospital, Gundersen Lutheran, has long been a pioneer in ensuring that the care provided to patients in their final months complies with their wishes. More recently, it has taken the lead in seeking to have Medicare compensate physicians for advising patients on end-of-life planning.

The hospital got its wish this spring when House Democrats inserted that provision into their health-care reform bill -- only to see former Alaska governor Sarah Palin seize on it as she warned about "death panels"

"The hospital began urging families to plan while people are healthy. For those who want help writing a directive, a physician will discuss the powers and limits of medicine and explain to family members what it means if they agree to serve as the "health-care agent." They will also help people define the conditions under which they would no longer want treatment.
The directives are power-of-attorney forms that protect physicians and family members against liability, and the hospital makes clear to its doctors that they are expected to follow them".

Life insurance companies and their agents, clergymen and the members of their religious organizations, and families having to deal with the subject simply as part of the natural order of things, broach this subject all the time.

Maybe we should just do this for cows and people...

Pain-free animals could take suffering out of farming

Quote

...
One objection to the idea of knocking out pain in livestock is that it could mean they put themselves in harm's way. In 2006, researchers identified six children from three Pakistani families with mutations that inactivated one particular gene. None of the children had ever felt pain, though they appeared otherwise healthy. All the kids had bruises and cuts, and one, who was known to place knives through his hand and walk on coals, died after jumping off a roof (Nature, vol 444, p 894).
...

That is almost funny.

Seriously, someone take a moment please to enlighten me as to why it is not a good idea to allow professionals to participate, when asked, in a discussion regarding keeping ones dignity when facing death.

No one has said it isn't - no one is stopping them from doing it.

Just because folks object to a provision in health care/insurance reform that advocates allowing reimbursement for it, does not stop anyone from doing it anyway. It just doesn't offer an incentive to do it.

The entire issue is nothing more then a political wedge...to seperate people from a rationale discussion of the issue...a typical republikan ploy.

I have to assume that none of you really believe what you are saying...that it's all for effect..party loyalty..racism..anything but rationale thinking by reasonable people. Its not as if the issues raised by healthcare reform are going to go away. Healthcare insurance is going to become more and more expensive...healthcare resources are going to be limited...the aging baby boomers who have all the money are going to drive helathcare priorities..to hell with the young...to hell with families..to hell with the uninsured. The question is who do you want administrator of this system...a corporation only interested in their profits for Wall Street reports..their bonuses...or your elected representative?

It's basically the same question as who you want to give your Social Security money to.....the stock market...or the treasury.

I know who I want speaking for me...and it isnt Wall Street or a corporation.
