Why you can't trust the media

So which is it? Is the recession getting worse, or better?

The headlines are confusing. The rate of job loss actually went down, even though overall jobless numbers increased. However, it is too early to claim that the recession is over. Until we see positive GDP numbers, it's not official.

the headlines indicate that the recession is being shortened and that a bunch of people just lost their jobs. the two are not mutually exclusive.

Don't unemployment and recession go hand in hand, though?

Your statement was a little confusing to me, yes. If unemployment and the recession are not mutually exclusive, how can one be getting better while the other gets worse?

My understanding of "mutually exclusive" is that both factors would have to operate independently of each other.

Then again, there's a reason I went to janitor school.

Basically, unemployment is a "lagging indicator"; that is, the economic engine (GDP) almost always recovers before job creation picks back up.

And actually, the productivity gains being shown now--without new employees being added--possibly leads to a "jobless recovery" (ie, profits and GDP growth without much impact on umemployment). We've been through this type of recovery before; one of the reasons that the schism between top and bottom wages continues to widen.

That help?

if you read the article it says we arent losing jobs AS FAST as the experts had predicted. But the rate still went up.

"Job market continues its long, steep decline, with the jobless rate rising and employers continuing to shed jobs, albeit at a slower rate than expected."

OMg....even Gravis had to straighten out his soul mate on this stupid thread! I do beleive McPissed on is right..that he does represent the average American which is why our standard of living is bound to fall...Americans are by and large idiots! They can even be convinced to fight against a healthcare reform bill that most of them will benifit from. But like Ive said before....I got mine..are you sure you got yours?

Your's seems to suck Vince. Either that or you are trying to go to the wrong kind of doctors.

Which is more idiotic? Asking questions about things you're not sure of, or spouting a bunch of obviously false bullshit and pretending it's fact?

At least I can learn, Vince. You'll always be beating your head off a brick wall to see which one is harder.

Speaking of MIA - where is the Obamasiah? I thought he was sick of being on vacation. Seems he has gone to someplace even more secluded?

And left Biden to open his mouth and insert his foot.

CURL: Biden fills vacationing Obama's void
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/sep/04/curl-biden-fills-vacationing-obamas-void/

Quote

...
The vice president, borrowing Mr. Obama's teleprompter for a speech before a friendly audience at the Brookings Institution, said "I" more than a dozen times as he pointed repeatedly to progress on the economy and to his lofty role in the process.

"Every week -- with notable exceptions -- I hold a Cabinet meeting. And most of the Cabinet secretaries attend," he told the audience in Washington.

"I made it clear that our focus had to be, in the first 100 days, accountability, transparency and responsiveness. I wanted each of those Cabinet secretaries to set up systems where they would have a high degree of confidence that as they implemented what they were in charge of, it would be done effectively and efficiently."

Mr. Biden said he had also talked to "every single governor except one, who's now a former governor." The crowd laughed, getting the reference to former Alaska Republican Gov. Sarah Palin. "By the way, it wasn't by design. She was going to be on a couple of times and couldn't for other reasons," he said defensively.

In a presidential-like declaration, Mr. Biden said the buck stops with him. "I take responsibility for mistakes that were made," he said at one point.
...

ROFL - this sound like a comedy routine.

So - it appears that Biden was the true problem all along... If only the media could get it straight.

Total words about the Van Jones controversy in the New York Times: 0.
Total words about the Van Jones controversy in the Washington Post: 0.
Total words about the Van Jones controversy on NBC Nightly News: 0.
Total words about the Van Jones controversy on ABC World News: 0.
Total words about the Van Jones controversy on CBS Evening News: 0.

If you were to receive all your news from any one of these outlets, or even all of them together, and you heard about some sort of controversy involving President Obama's Special Adviser for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, your response would be, "Huh?" If you heard that that adviser, Van Jones, had apologized for a number of remarks and positions in the recent past, your response would be, "What?" And if you were in the Obama White House monitoring the Jones situation, you would be hoping that the news organizations listed above continue to hold the line -- otherwise, Jones, who is quite well thought of in Obama circles, would be history.
...

Vince will no doubt call this "racist" - then again, just look at the things Van Jones says, and racist is the least offensive word you could use for some of it.

Van Jones: Only ‘Suburban White Kids’ Shoot Up Schools
http://www.breitbart.tv/van-jones-only-suburbal-white-kids-shoot-up-schools/

Yep, the blacks and Hispanics are much more civilized and just gun the kids down in the streets.

Quote

"You've never seen a Columbine done by a black child. Never. They always say, 'We can't believe it happened here. We can't believe it's these suburban white kids.' It's only them. Now, a black kid might shoot another black kid. He's not going to shoot up the whole school."

LOL - and the excuse is - the black and hispanic kids get beat up and arrested when they are problems, where they just ignore the white kid.

Thats true generally in society...if you think it's just blind justice that has 33% of the black male community is in jail..you are a simpleton...or a liar.

I guess some people are uncomfortable with an angry black man...every where on the internet today I read how people are outraged over this..outraged over that...outraged white people are acceptable...but not an angry black man. What a joke!

This one is too close to call...

Pence calls on Van Jones to resign
http://www.politico.com/blogs/glennthrush/0909/Pence_calls_on_Van_Jones_to_resign.html

Quote

Rep. Mike Pence, the no. 3 Republican in the House, is calling on Obama green jobs czar Van Jones to resign.

This sort of thing would usually be laughed off by Democrats -- a conservative Republican telling a Democratic appointee to quit.

But the Obama team isn't exactly jumping to back Jones today in wake of revelations that in the past he signed on to one of the "truther" groups that claimed 9/11 was an inside job.

...

"Given recent revelations concerning the associations and statements of the president's green jobs czar, Van Jones should resign his position and if he is unwilling to do so, the president should demand his resignation. His extremist views and coarse rhetoric have no place in this Administration or the public debate," Pence said. "The Constitution of the United States vests Congress with the responsibility to advise and consent in the appointment of high ranking officials by the president. To date, President Obama has appointed more than thirty individuals to ‘czar’ positions within his Administration without permitting the Congress or the American people to properly examine their backgrounds or public records."
