Has Virginia ever had a good hurricane?
Posted by: curious lurker ()

I just moved to NoVa two years ago, and have never experienced a hurricane - hoping the current one takes a swing at us! It sounds like a total blast! Any of you veteran fairfaxers ever been hit with a good one here? Does the local government have a good handle on managing things? Should I stock up on anything besides beer?

Hurricane Agnes, I think 1978. Washed out a bridge in Occoquan that was a major Potomac River crossing during the Civil War.

We used to get a pretty good one every few years and multiple larger storms in a year. Agnes and Camille were probably the biggest. By the time that they get here they're mostly rain events more than anything else. Both of those dumped a ton. Agnes is why every major creek around here was bulldozed and riprapped to prevent flooding like that again.

Agnes was a Tropical Storm when it got here, not a Hurricane. Isabel was a Hurricane back in 2005 I think.

Doesn't really make any difference as far as the damage done. Some of the remnants have been worse than the definition hurricanes.

Agnes was probably the worst that I remember. Shirlington and all of Four Mile Run, Huntington, Holmes Run, GW Parkway were under water. Great Falls was completely trashed. Georgetown and Aleaxandria flooded. Lake Barcroft dam almost collapsed. Roads and bridges washed out all over. As dumbass kids we were doing some serious whitewater rafting in innertubes down Accotink Creek dodging downed trees wearing our football helmets. That shit was moving too. lol

Camille

The night of August 19, 1969, Hurricane Camille hit Virginia with a vengeance, making it one of only three Category 5 storms to make landfall in the U.S. Over the night of August 19 and into the early morning, 28 inches of rain fell in only 8 hours. The storm is considered the worst natural disaster in Virginia’s 400-year history, claiming as many as 150 lives and causing $116 million in damages. The worst of the storm centered in Nelson County in southwest Virginia. Today, a memorial stands in Lovingston to honor those who lost their lives to Hurricane Camille.

Trust me, you do want want to go through a hurricane. I did and it was one of the scariest things I've ever experienced. Hundreds of big trees down (including one falling through the roof of the home I was staying at), property destroyed, roads ripped up (literally pulverized), power lines down everywhere, electricity out for weeks. And that was a Cat 1. It was not a fun experience - at all.

Isabel as the last bad one I remember here. Around that time a couple did some major damage to southeast Virginia.

I can just imagine, Obama, Hillary, Trump, all standing next to me sandbagging Accotink Creek for the photo op. (Well, Hillary would probably be serving me coffee and sandwiches in the emergency field canteen.)

We could use a good hurricane. All that insurance company money would be flowing into my bank accounts and into the pockets of the illegals I hire.

You don't kill them at the end of the job so you don't have to pay them anymore?

I am saddened by the loss of entrepreneurial spirit in this country today.

Was Isobel a hurricane in Fairfax County? It wasn't in my area. In my area of Fairfax County, the last full-fledged hurricane was Hazel in 1954.
