EW YORK (WABC) -- Former New York Giant Plaxico Burress pleaded guilty Thursday morning in a deal with prosecutors that will send him to prison for two years.
Burress pleaded guilty to on count of second-degree attempted criminal possession of a weapon. He will also be subject to two years post-prison supervision.
The deal, hammered out between prosecutors in the Manattan District Attorney's Offfice and Burress' lawyer, was the result of negotiations ongoing since his arrest last November.
Burress was indicted earlier this month on gun possession charges for accidentally shooting himself in the thigh in a nightclub.
During negotations, Burress' attorney was attempting to limit his client's prison time to a year behind bars. But the Manhattan District Attorney's office insisted on two years.
If Burress had been convicted of all charges, he could have faced 3 1/2 to 15 years in prison.

no, but I have heard of people being sent to prison for illegally possessing firearms.
Please, he got off easy. He had 2 counts of possessing an unregistered and concealed firearm in NY City, each with Mandatory minimums of 3.5 yrs. They had him dead to rights - so the fact that he was able to plea bargain to get 2 years (and he will probably get early release) is a boon for him.

He was named after his uncle. So believe it or not, there are actually 2 people walking around with that goofy name.
It's not so much because he shot himself, it's because he might have accidently shot someone else at the club.
What if the gun had hit the floor and discharged in the other direction? The club was packed full of similar dummies, including Antonio Pierce (whose lucky the bullet didn't hit him).
I have to believe that this penalty is to send a message to every other idiot that wants to be cool and bring guns into clubs. Also, anyone that brings a gun into a club most likely has probably never had any firearm training and therefore shouldn't even possess a gun in the first place. Plaxico is a prime example of this. Just another big dork that ruined his life because he wanted to look cool.

He didn't have one, and being a NJ resident he couldn't get one to carry in NYC anyways. Yeah their gun laws are really strict. Idiot shouldn't have worn sweatpants and expect a gun to stay in place tucked in there.

Especially since he was carrying a Glock which has no external safeties. He probably reached in his pocket and snagged the trigger.

For the want of a $35 holster, his freedom and career are lost...

What the heck was he carrying a gun for in the first place?
A) Get a permit
B) If you don't have a permit, leave the gun at home
C) If you feel your in danger, you're rich, hire a bodyguard
D) If you can't get a bodygaurd, go hang out somewhere less dangerous or stay home

I dunno and don't really care. That's all on him. If you've decided that you absolutely positively must carry a weapon on you for some reason or another, do it the right way. If he hadn't shot himself, he probably wouldn't have been busted. Keeping the gun in a holster would likely have prevented that, either by keeping the gun on his waistband or by preventing him from sticking his finger in the trigger guard.
You are right though, this was a failure of basic intelligence from start to finish. First, don't break the law. If you must break the law, don't get caught.
