I find it greatly ironic that most people criticize the government (for constantly screwing up over and over again...think Post Office, $1,000 hammers, Iraq War..) and yet feel so confident that the government (in this case, the criminal justice system) won't F-up that they agree to let them take the lives of fellow citizens.

Oh, and all the while, they are the part of the very same citizenry.
