Why do people buy Chrysler products?
Posted by: eesh ()
Date: August 19, 2009 01:36PM

I've been driving a rental car for the past couple of days, a Dodge Caliber. The interior quality is terrible, the transmission never knows what gear is wants, it feels like it is going to flip over around turns at 20 MPH, and the most retarded thing of all, a refrigerated glovebox, which does nothing but produce condensation.

This car costs 20k, surely there are better options out there. After driving this, I can see why Chrysler is bankrupt, but the bigger question is, why do people buy Chryslers at all?

I gotta be honest. I don't think the Chrysler Crossfire is a bad looking car. I drove one when I was down in Tampa for a conference not long ago. And it handled pretty damned well.

My wife has a Pacifica, she loves it, and it's never given us problems. I have ridden in a Caliber and it sucks-as do most Chrysler products.

Concur on the Caliber. I had one as a rental when my car was in the shop. What a steaming pile of dog feces.

If it wasnt for companies like Avis, Hertz, Alamo, Budget and Enterprise, GM and Chrysler would already be dead.

Car loyalty is often tied to family history. When I was a kid, my parents always bought Dodge/Chrysler. For much of may adult life, I drove a Dodge or Chrysler. However, a few years ago I gave up on Chrysler. While I never had major problems with any of the vehicles I owned, I always had gnawing little problems. For instance, fluid leaks, squeaking belts, plastic parts that broke off constantly, odd quirks in the electrical system (like panel lights arbitrarily switching brightness levels). So I gave up on all American cars. Never again. They are all crap.

I bought the only Chrysler product worth buying, a Jeep Rubicon. Admittedly, it was overrpiced, but what is more American then driving a jeep with oversized tires? The one year it snowed two inches, I was ready. I still cry about they day i traded it in for a German import.

I guess the Jeep was good because it was so stipped down, there wasn't much that could go wrong. No power windows, locks, and overall very little wiring in cab.

Has anyone ever seen that Plymouth Prowler?

That's a sweet ass ride for a Chrysler.

On that note, is it me, or does the Chrysler 300 look like it is a Bentley knock-off?

I could have sworn I saw a 2 door Dodge Charger yesterday. Not the old one, but the latest version. I didn't think they made them in 2 door models, but it looked badass.

I liked the looks of the 300 when I first saw it in 2004, but its starting to look tired. Certainly not a car that has a timeless appearance.

Anyway, Prowlers are going to be worth some serious money one day.

Yeah, actually I did a search yesterday on cars.com and they have several in the 1997-2001 range with less than 20k miles. Very low considering an 8-12 year old car. Buyers must have had that in mind that it would be a collectable. Most are reselling at $30k+

What was the sticker price back in the day?

Prowler sold for almost 40k in 1997. Price went up to 44k before Chrysler killed the Plymouth brand in 2002.

As far as the 2 door Dodge Charger, you probably saw one of the new Challengers.

I have a 98 Jeep Cherokee (Sport) with 170,000 miles and its in showroom
condition. Love the 4WD in winter. I've had very few problems with it and
most of them were routine repairs. I have also taken great pains to make
sure the oil is changed every 2400 miles and all fluids are topped off.
Upkeep is all important no matter what kind of car you have. When my kids
got their drivers licenses, they used to fight over which one of them would
get to drive the Jeep as opposed to my wife's Civic. The best part is that
I havent made a car payment since 98.

I had a Jeep obsession well before I got my license. It wasn't until college that I got my first one and drove that sucker into the ground, literally. Fun to drive and quite popular at the time. If I recall, maintenence and parts were on the cheap too.

It's nice to see someone else keeps their cars for a long time. Buying a car every time you finish paying off the last loan just to say you have a new car is stupid.

Yeah, I agree. Only buy a new car if you've got the cash to put down. Those auto rates are rediculous. If not, you've just got to drive that car into the ground and hope that one day you'll leave that non-profit job that has a bonus taxed at 25%.

British luxury cars actually rank higher than your refridgerator with wheels. Where's Kia and Hyundai on this list? Talking out of your ass is probably why you are still working at a non-profit making less than what I pay my secretary.

I believe it, but reliability ratings are vastly overrated. For every broken down Audi, there are 100+ on the road that have no problems.

On that note, the latest JD Powers survey rated Jaguar with the highest reliability of 2008. So that means the Brits went from last to first overnight? I don't believe it.

I think it's all relative to who's got the time and effort to fill out an 8 page survey for the $1 buck they put in the envelope.

Remember writing this? Talk about talking out of your ass.

JD Powers, as you say, is bullshit. It is based on surveys that only a few people bother to mail in.

Go to Consumer Reports, and look at Audi versus Lexus. Look at long-term reliability. The same goes for Jaguar and Land Rover, they are literally in the shop every month. Remember what you said about your LR2? You are getting rid of it as soon as the warranty expires....

Actually it doesn't pay bad. Granted people could and do make more in the private sector, but I like the non-profit I work for, and we actually do some good.

So, I was off by a year. I quoted it because you seem to hang onto reliability like it's the end-all and be-all of automobiles. Yes, my LR3 is mechanically inept. Everything that I've had wrong with it was fixed under warranty without a dime out of my pocket. I even got a loaner car each time. Does it aggravate me? Not really. I really enjoy driving it when it works and if I didn't have the loaner car, I probably would feel different.

My A5 is still too new to judge. I haven't had anything wrong with it in the short time I've had it. My other two Audi's I've owned since then were mechanically perfect other than a minor issue with one that was fixed in the same day. I had each for 4 years, then dumped them after the warranty expired. I don't know where you're getting at "literally in the shop every month." That's a gross generalization.

I still can't believe Jaguar is #1. I never bother to send in my JD Powers survey because it's obviously flawed. Which begs the question is Lexus's rating really as high as advertised?

Yes, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan, along with their luxury brands, are always at or near the top. Just check out the lastest Consumer Reports magazine or web publications.

As far as your reliable Audis, good for you. I just know the people I have talked to have nothing but drivetrain problems. As far as your Land Rover, why is it worth the headache if it has been that unreliable?

Well, remember, a lot of us bought two or three years ago when dealers were offering 0.00% financing like there was no tomorrow....Net cost is the same as cash, and frankly its actually cheaper as the value of moneyl decreases over time. Hence, you actually paid less at 0.00% than paying ful cash on the barrel.

You know, I asked myself the same question the other night. I would say it's purely aesthetics in that I admire the quirkiness and style of a British (really, a Ford - now Indian) truck. I wanted something mid-sized, affordable, but didn't like the ML350 (too mini-van looking) or X5 (price is a bit higher; everyone has one on our block). Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7 are somewhat fugly.

I really hated it last year when my neighbor a few houses down bought a new LR3 with the SAME GODDAMN COLOR as mine. It was strange, but I felt like he was infringing on my individuality. I found it hard to be happy for him. I might have felt different if he picked another color, but what a total dick.

I know what you mean. That is the only way I'd finance is if the borrowing rate is less than what I'd get for a similar termed bank CD. 0% always wins. Actually, anything up to 3% over a 4-year term is usually a good deal.

In an interview with website Big Think, Stephen Hawking warned that the long-term future of the planet is in outer space.

"It will be difficult enough to avoid disaster on planet Earth in the next hundred years, let alone the next thousand, or million. The human race shouldn't have all its eggs in one basket, or on one planet," he said.

"I see great dangers for the human race," Hawking said. "There have been a number of times in the past when its survival has been a question of touch and go. The Cuban missile crisis in 1963 was one of these. The frequency of such occasions is likely to increase in the future."

"But I'm an optimist. If we can avoid disaster for the next two centuries, our species should be safe, as we spread into space," he said.

University of Michigan astrophysicist Katherine Freese told Big Think that "the nearest star [to Earth] is Proxima Centauri which is 4.2 light years away. That means that, if you were traveling at the speed of light the whole time, it would take 4.2 years to get there" -- or about 50,000 years using current rocket science.

Still, we need to act and act fast, Hawking stated. "It will be difficult enough to avoid disaster in the next hundred years, let alone the next thousand or million. Our only chance of long-term survival is not to remain inward looking on planet Earth but to spread out into space. We have made remarkable progress in the last hundred years. But if we want to continue beyond the next hundred years, our future is in space."

This is not the first time Hawking has warned of impending planetary doom. In 2006, the physicist warned that Earth was at an ever increasing risk of being wiped out. And lately, Hawking has become quite outspoken.

In April, he warned of the dangers of communicating with aliens, telling the Discovery Channel that extra-terrestrials are almost certain to exist -- and humanity should avoid contact with them at all cost.

“To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational,†he said. “The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like.â€

The answer, he suggests, is that most of alien life will be the equivalent of microbes or simple animals -- the sort of life that has dominated Earth for most of its history -- and they could pose a serious threat to us.

In May Hawking said he believed humans could travel millions of years into the future and repopulate their devastated planet. If spaceships are built that can fly faster than the speed of light, a day on board would be equivalent to a year on Earth. That's because -- according to Einstein -- as objects accelerate through space, time slows down around them.

I rented the 2005 Chrysler Crossfire Limited Edition Convertible in Florida a few years back, and I loved that car. I offered to buy it, but someone else had already placed an offer on it (It only had 11k miles!). That ride was so smooth, the handling was awesome, and no matter how hard I swung that thing around a corner it never fishtailed like so many RWD cars seem to do (My F-body would pull wicked fishtails in rain). It was a tiptronic transmission, and after playing around with it for a week, I got the manual shift timing down perfectly. I was able to launch that thing quicker than a bat out of hell, and it was a ton of fun. The ride pretty much looked like this one here:

The one thing I really love about the Crossfire, is that it's one of the very few cars which in my view looks better in the chopped top version, as opposed to the hard-top. This is especially true with cloth tops, which many versions I don't like the look of when they're up, but on the Crossfire it looks great.

I can't tell you the number of compliments I got while driving that car as well, from both ladies and guys. I guess they figured I was also extremely lucky to be driving one of those as a 20 year old, and yeah, I felt like a richie rich while cruising around in it (It is re-badged Mercedes after all).

What is better than a Jeep Wrangler (ecxluding the new ones) or Cherokee two classic offroad vehicles which tear it up, and while the on road mpg is kind of weak still great to drive with the top and doors off the Wrangler.

Chrysler was better back in the day... only a few vehicles I would drive by them now.. and probably own none.

Didn't Chrysler accept bail out money? Fuck them. Buy Japanese; they need the help more than Chrysler's fat cat execs and slothful union thugs.

Yeah, if the people that think patriotism is "buy American" knew how much American labor went into Japanese brands, they would shit a brick.

Buy a Toyota Camry, you are supporting Georgetown Kentucky, buy a Honda Accord, you are supporting Lincoln Alabama.

True, so confusing. Maybe if Volkswagons were made in Japan they wouldn't have so many electrical problems.

Here we are in 2012, and Chrysler can't figure out how to make a door lock that defeats flat head screwdrivers.

The police officer who took their report told Bautista and Ryan that Dodge Chargers are a favorite among thieves because the cars are exceptionally easy to break into. The criminals often use a flat-head screwdriver to break and enter, the officer told them.

“Apparently, with the Dodge Charger, it’s as easy as getting into the keyhole in the door,” Bautista said. “That’s how the perpetrator got into our personal belongings in the trunk.”

Actually that's most cars. Some easier/harder than others but if you're a thief and don't care about the car, then taking a screwdriver and banging it into the lock and popping it out will expose the mechanism. From there you just need to catch the link to the latch.

Interesting, but Chryslers have always been some of the easiest cars to steal, and nothing has been improved. Not only are they easy to open, but breaking the ignition is insanely easy too.
